Obituary

Capt. Howard Fred Benson, Jr., USAF, 73, passed away January 13, 2018. He was born March 15, 1944, in Clear Lake, Wisconsin to Howard and Martha Benson. Howard Jr. is survived by his sister Carol, brother John, daughter Kirsten, son Erik, and grandson Jacob Thomas. He is preceded in death by his mother, father, sister Ruell, and sister Mary.

Howard grew up in Clear Lake, Wisconsin and Carbondale, Illinois, where he later attended Southern Illinois University and joined Air Force ROTC. He served in the United States Air Force for fifteen years, including in Vietnam. After leaving the Air Force, Howard worked as a systems engineer for Martin Marietta, TRW, and Northrop Grumman.

Howard was an avid collector of stamps and coins, and was the Operations Director of the Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library. He was a high school baseball umpire and enjoyed Major League Baseball. He was also interested in European history and science fiction.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library in Howard’s honor, or to a veteran’s charity of your choice.

A Funeral Service will be held 10:30AM, Thursday January 25, at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home (11150 E. Dartmouth Ave Aurora, CO 80014). Graveside service 12:30PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery Staging Area "B" (4400 W. Kenyon Ave Denver, CO 80236).
