Leland Ray Gurss

September 3, 1940 — April 20, 2024

Leland was born in St. Francis, Kansas, on September 3, 1940, to Alfred and Opal Gurss. He died in his home on April 20, 2024, surrounded by his wife and family after suffering for six years with Interstitial Lung Disease. He worked for the Railroad for forty years as a supervisor.

He graduated from Liberty High School in Joes, CO, in 1958.

On September 3, 1961, he married Sharon Dietz in Kirk, CO. Three boys were born into this marriage: Greg (1962), Ronnie (1964), and Gary (1968).

Leland's passion for reading was unparalleled. His home was a sanctuary of knowledge, housing over 5,000 books. This love of reading was a legacy he passed down to his granddaughters. He was a pillar of support for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always present at their sporting and school events.

Leland's love for sports was a constant in his life. In 2009, he embarked on a memorable trip to New York to watch his beloved Yankees play. He was a regular at Nuggets, Broncos, and Rockies games, always cheering on his favorite teams. Leland and Sharon were constantly remodeling their home. He found solace tending to his yard and planting flowers. His pride and joy was the 1999 Mustang convertible he bought for Sharon in 2001.

Leland leaves to mourn his passing his wife Sharon of 62 and a half years; his boys, Greg and Taleen of Folsom, CA, Ronnie and Wendi of San Diego, CA, and Gary and Tamara of Thornton, CO; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. His brother and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends also survived him. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Frances, and his in-laws.

His family and friends will sadly miss Leland.
