Jewish Funeral Traditions

Horan & McConaty is honored to serve Denver's Jewish community in their time of loss. Whether you are Orthodox or Reform, seeking a traditional funeral or a more personalized service, we will ensure your loved one is laid to rest in a way that honors them and their heritage.

Observing Jewish Customs

Traditional Jewish funerals follow a specific order of events, designed to provide solace and structure during the grieving process:

  • Shmira, the guarding of the body from death until burial
  • The funeral service, often held at a synagogue or funeral home
  • Procession to the cemetery and burial service
  • Shiva, a seven-day mourning period observed in the home of the bereaved

By Jewish custom, burial must take place as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours of death. We are available day and night to bring your loved one into our care and begin the funeral process as quickly as possible.

We will work closely with your rabbi to plan the service and will accommodate the Chevra Kadisha in caring for your loved one's body so you know everything will be handled with respect to tradition and their dignity. We'll also take care of transport to the synagogue and cemetery, arrange for the pine box casket and tachrichim, and can help coordinate catering and any other services you need at this difficult time.

If you have any questions regarding our Jewish funeral services or if you need help arranging for a loved one's care, please reach out to us at 303-745-4418 or visit any of our Denver funeral home locations. We are here to support you in honoring your loved one's life and your faith.
