Winifred Cox

February 11, 1933 — June 6, 2022

With sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Winifred Joy Cox on Monday, June 6, 2022.

Joy was born in Vancouver, BC, Canada, on February 11, 1933, to Arthur H. and Winnifred Warner.

She attended Victoria Composite High School in Edmonton, Alberta, and went on to obtain her BSc Registered Nursing degree at University of Alberta Hospital School of Nursing. As a young nurse, Joy loved working with newborns and assisting with surgeries.

In 1955 she married John D. (J.D.) Cox, and they had three children. The family moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1967, where Joy earned her BS in Allied Health in 1975. She later became a naturalized US citizen. She retired from Aurora Hills Middle School as a school nurse.

Joy loved music and hymns and was often humming her favorites. From 1946 to 1952, Joy attended the Toronto Conservatory of Music (now known as the Royal Conservatory of Music) in Edmonton and was an accomplished pianist and organist. Her other hobbies included reading, knitting and needlepoint, gardening, and cooking – she made a great Harvey Wallbanger cake!

Joy is survived by her children, Jay Warner, Catherine Cox, and Diane Fotinos; her son-in-law, Meletios Fotinos; her grandchildren, Linnea Covington (Matthew Lundquist), Eva Covington, Nikolas Fotinos, and Elizabeth (Ella) Fotinos, and her great grandchildren; Gunnar and Jack Lundquist. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Art and Winnie Warner, her sister Patricia Anzini, and her brothers Robert and Donald.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held September 19, 2022, at St. John’s Cathedral, 1350 N. Washington St., Denver, at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment and reception also to be held at the Cathedral.
