William Hatton

November 30, 1925 — September 8, 2020

William (Bill) E. Hatton, 94, died on September 8, 2020, in Denver, CO. Born November 30, 1925, in Massena, Iowa, he lived his adult life in Denver, Colorado with his wife of 64 years, Catherine J. Hatton (deceased).  Bill was in the trucking business during his working career and worked for a few of the trucking companies located in the Denver area for over 30 years. He became office manager at Consolidated Freightways early in his career and by his retirement was a Manager at ANR Freight. After retiring from the trucking business, he then worked part time at Rickenbaugh Cadillac as a customer service driver, shuttling clients to and from their work or homes while their vehicles were being serviced. He loved driving, whether for work or pleasure and was known by family and friends for his “6 hour drives” on Sunday after church, which took them all to far away points of interest in the Colorado plains or mountains.

Bill is one of the members of the “Greatest Generation” and served in the Navy during WWII.  He was on the USS Flint in the Pacific during the war. He attended and graduated from Denver University on the GI Bill, with a Bachelor’s degree in Business. Later, he became very active in the annual reunions of the troops who served with him on the USS Flint for many years. Bill is known for his Irish humor, great smile, genuine caring sprit and humility.

Bill met Cae McCarthy in 1954 on a blind date and married shortly after that. They had three children. Bill was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Treasurer of the organization for years. He also was a devoted Catholic and long-time parishioner of St. Vincent DePaul, where the children attended school. Bill loved football and baseball and had season tickets to the Denver Broncos from 1969 until the new stadium was built. He also loved the Colorado Rockies and spent many nights and days watching them play on TV these past few years when he was bed-ridden.

Survivors include his children and their spouses: Michele (Keith) Ashby, Denver, CO; Mark (Patty) Hatton, Phoenix, AZ; and Marla (Virgil) Hawkins, Livermore, CO.  His Grandchildren and spouses, Johny Stell (Kisori Thomas), Denver, CO; Mason Hatton, Phoenix, AZ; Hannah Hatton, Tuscon, AZ; and Great-Grandchildren, Kai Jaden Stell-Thomas, Denver, CO;  Matthew Bonder, Grove City, OH.
