Virginia Dilly

September 14, 1936 — August 16, 2022

Virginia F. Dilly, 85 of Centennial, Colorado passed away on August 16th, 2022.

Virginia was a generous, strong, yet loving force impacting the lives of both family and friends. She was the matriarch of her family both immediate and extended, whom she loved deeply. Many of us felt that she was the bedrock that connected all of us together, for Virginia was a great listener and confidante, offering solace, support, and intuitive advice. We share in the memory that she was always available for many phone calls, which served to ground us and remind us of what was important. We also remember the many cards and letters, with thoughtful messages in her beautiful handwriting sent to family and friends, to commemorate special occasions.

She was fiercely loyal, spiritual, and compassionately connected with individuals she met, equally capturing their uniqueness: who they were, their families and friends, their motivations, fears, joys, losses, and aspirations. When inquiring about others, you would discover that she was a repository of knowledge, capturing the details of their lives which she held with reverence. She always strove to be positive, and no one can forget her smile.

She was curious to the end, open minded about the world, and accepting of different points of view, which contributed to her ability to connect with others. She was both strong in her beliefs, but also a peacemaker, concerned as Mother Theresa once said, “we had forgotten that we all belong to one another.” She believed that division within both family and friends was time wasted when love and tolerance could have easily taken its place, but that negativity and pettiness often succeeded because they were easier. She was a strong supporter of opportunities for women and of diversity – an admirer of the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt, Georgia O’Keefe, and Barack Obama. She prayed for a less divided country and world and always carried Psalm 23 with her.

Not everyone was aware that Virginia modeled as a young woman and completed the circle later in life, when she was asked by Chico’s to model its’ line at Park Meadows Mall in Lone Tree, Colorado. She loved and appreciated art, design, and color which were reflected in her personal style. Her children remember her marionettes, art projects, and handmade Halloween costumes.  She enjoyed shopping but chose only quality pieces, giving generously to her family and friends. She loved musical theater and had a beautiful singing voice, which you could hear from her kitchen when she was making her beloved morning coffee.

Virginia enjoyed trips to Rome, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and California, visiting family and friends on the East Coast, and exploring Colorado. She loved the Denver Botanic Gardens and Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey. Virginia was an avid fan of Denver Sports teams and enjoyed watching English period shows like “Downton Abbey” and British mysteries such as “Grantchester.” She was a daily watcher of “The View,” loved “Saturday Night Live”, and stayed up to date with current events.

Virginia was born in Jersey City, NJ on September 14th, 1936, growing up in Rutherford and Garfield with her parents Paul and Ann Faust. As an only child she connected deeply with her friends and cousins - maintaining a lifelong connection to her relatives and best friends from elementary and high school who referred to themselves as “The Three Hungarians”. Virginia received a bachelor’s degree from Montclair State University, completed some graduate work, and became an art teacher. Before settling in Colorado in 1996, she lived in Bay Head, New Jersey where she continued to develop close relationships which she nurtured until her passing. A homemaker and lifelong caregiver for elderly family in New Jersey and in Colorado, she faced the many challenges of life with grace and strength.

Virginia is survived by her four children, Lisa Lucas (Ken Terry), Virginia Lucas (Christian Smith), Heather Dilly Flanders and Chris Dilly (Kristy Suedmeier), her many grandchildren Kyra Klug, Ian Flanders, Aron Klug, Destin Klug, Katharine Flanders and Luna Dilly, and great granddaughter Nevaeh Klug.
