Thomas Carroll

June 13, 1934 — May 23, 2022

Thomas M. Carroll, 87, of Denver, Colorado, passed away on May 23, 2022.  Tom was a native of Bronx, NY and a resident of Mamaroneck, NY for 43 years before he moved west to be closer to his grandchildren in California and Colorado.

Tom was born in the south Bronx on June 13, 1934 to Bernard and Mary Carroll.  He attended St. Anselm’s parish and was an altar boy and bugler, Cardinal Hayes High School, Cathedral College and St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie, leaving shortly before ordination.  He was proud of being the soloist in the seminary choir and being elected the Mayor of Dunwoodie in his final year.

Tom went to NYU at night and received his master’s degrees in sociology and psychology.  He also studied at the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Cornell School of Industrial Relations, Catholic University of Puerto Rico and Harvard University.  Tom joined the New York City College of Technology/CUNY in 1967, where he was appointed Dean in 1971 and served in that capacity under nine different presidents until his retirement in 1999. He spoke Spanish fluently and loved to write, even having several of his essays published.  In addition to singing, Tom played piano, guitar, banjo, harmonica and nearly any instrument, all by ear.

Tom cherished the time he spent with this wife, children and especially grandchildren, to whom he was lovingly known as Gramps.  Above all, Tom was best known as the Irishman who always had a way with a story or a joke, the ability to make anyone feel warmly welcomed and a deep love for music. Tom loved his family, enjoyed his work and cherished his life.  He asked to share this quote with his family and friends:

“And on the day that I die

I’d like jokes to be told

And stories of old
To be rolled out like carpets

That children have played on

And laid on while listening

To stories of old.”  Paul McCartney

Tom is survived by his wife of 59 years, Patricia, his son Matthew, daughter-in-law Josephine and grandchildren Mia and Jenson, and his daughter Jeanne Montross, son-in-law Tom, and granddaughter Nora.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Denver Catholic Charities https://ccdenver.org.
