Susan Jacobsen

June 20, 1947 — July 13, 2022

Arvada

Susan Dodd Jacobsen--a vivacious soul with an offbeat sense of humor and a caring generous heart--left this world suddenly on July 13th, 2022 at the age of 75.  She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her friends and family will continue to honor her legacy by living life to the fullest, as she did.

A native of Tulsa, OK, she was born the youngest of three children to Dr. Nevin W. Dodd and his wife Bernice.  She possessed a rebellious streak (which was surprising to no one who knew her). This often put her at odds with her parents, her brother Nevin Jr. and her sister Jeanie.  She met the love of her life, Peter Jacobsen, while working at a bar; the two were soon married and moved to Colorado, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary July 30th, 2021.

Susan spent her career in the medical industry working first in nuclear medicine, and then as a phlebotomist for Lutheran Medical Center and surrounding clinics.  While she found this work fulfilling, she never stopped learning.  Her love of water led her to the Wild Dolphin Project, a long-term research project based out of Jupiter, FL.  Susan spent weeks every fall volunteering on the WDP research boat as cook, crew and general help.  She was also drawn to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science after her retirement, earning her paleontology certificate and spending time volunteering in the "Bone Lab", helping to uncover fossils.  However, her greatest love in the later part of her life was karate.  Starting as a white belt at the age of 58, she progressed through the ranks and was a 4th degree black belt with the title of Renshi at the time of her passing.  She dearly loved her karate family, both at her home dojo of America's Best Martial Arts, and throughout Colorado, where she was beloved by many within the entire Colorado Karate Association.  She was a fierce competitor, a wise teacher, and a kind mentor.

Susan was the only one of her siblings to marry and have children and was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and sister, and her son, Matthew Dodd Jacobsen.  She is survived by her husband Peter, her daughter Jordan, and her beloved grandchildren, Phineas, Soren, Arwen and Katherine.

A memorial service and reception to follow is scheduled for 1pm on October 23rd at Horan & McConaty, in Arvada, CO.  In lieu of flowers, please donate in her memory to The Wild Dolphin Project.
