Susan Chu

Susan Mary Chu, beloved mother of Charlene Chu and treasured aunt of 12 nieces and nephews, died on April 21, 2021 of metastatic colon cancer at The Denver Hospice at the age of 88. Susan was born in Montreal, Canada and served as a Catholic nun on the east coast for 17 years. During that time, she took the name Sister Veronica and worked as a grade-school teacher in Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia and Yonkers and Harlem, New York. A much-loved teacher, she remained in contact with some of her students until her death.

In the late 1960s, Susan felt a different calling and left her religious vocation. She re-settled in Colorado and started a family. She married William Feezun Chu – an immigrant from China who had served as a general in Chiang Kai-shek’s army – and gave birth to her only child, Charlene. Faith remained central in her life until the end. Susan is most remembered for her love of people, her honesty and humility, and her untiring faith and positive attitude.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, David and Catherine Humes, and by her older brothers, James and William. Susan is survived by her daughter Charlene; nieces Nancy, Cathy, namesake Susan, Maryann, Jennifer, and Theresa; and nephews David (her godson), Bill, Michael, Brian, John, and Jim (deceased). Grand-nephew Kris Whalen and wife Laura were also close to her in her final years.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am on Monday, May 10 at St. Mark Catholic Church in Westminster, Colorado and presided over by grand-nephew Fr. Ted Penton, SJ, in whom she took great pride.
