Richard "Dick" Cleaver

Richard J. “Dick” Cleaver, formerly of Michigan, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2022, in Lakewood, Colorado after a long illness. He was 86.

Dick was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on June 6, 1936, son of the late Clarence and Dorothy Cleaver. He was married to the love of his life, Carol Ann (Hartman) Cleaver, for 54 years before her passing in 2013.

Dick graduated from Kalamazoo Central HS in 1953 and spent three years in the U.S. Army serving in Germany in the 1950’s. Following his discharge, he attended Western Michigan University, graduating in 1961.

Dick spent his entire career, 40 years, with Consumers Power Company (now CMS Energy). He and Carol moved around often with Consumers, living in Kalamazoo, Jackson, Lansing, Waterford, and Grand Rapids. They also spent two years in Bursa, Turkey right before he retired. They loved to travel, play golf, attend Michigan games, and spend time with their children and grandchildren.

Dick is survived by his three children, Kathryn Bisaro of Warwick, NY; John and his wife Karen of Lakewood, CO; and Tom and his wife Sherilyn of Kingwood, TX. His pride and joy were his eight grandchildren: Samantha (Drew) DeLuca of Newark, DE; Marina (Cameron) Gossett of Grand Rapids, MI; Anna (Matthew) Jones of Elkridge, MD; Benjamin (fiancée Felicia) Bisaro of Brooklyn, NY; Margaret Cleaver of Lakewood, CO; Nathan Cleaver of Dallas, TX; Amanda Cleaver of Minneapolis, MN; and George Cleaver of Kingwood, TX; and seven great-grandchildren: Emma, AJ, Nick and Lily DeLuca; Brendan and Liam Jones; and Connor Gossett. He is also survived by his brother Ed Cleaver of Kalamazoo; sister Penny (Richard) Bagwell of Punta Gorda, FL; brother-in-law Jack Hartman of Portage; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, Carol, Dick was predeceased by his sister, Donna Wotta, and sisters-in-law, Judy Cleaver and Kathleen Hartman.

A celebration of Dick’s life will be held at a later date in Michigan. Memorial contributions in Dick’s honor may be made to the American Kidney Fund at www.kidneyfund.org .
