Patricia Morse-Beard

June 26, 1945 — September 24, 2020

Berthoud

Patricia was born to Dorothy and Carl Minister in Seattle, Washington on June 26th, 1945.  It is an unknown made up fact that she drew her first piece of art on the side of her baby bed in the hospital.  Still unsure of where she obtained brushes, watercolor paint and ink pens, it was a masterpiece leaving the nursing staff awestruck and marked the beginning of the life of a an extremely talented and amazing artist, wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandma, great grandma, and pasta enthusiast.  The family moved to California where her middle sister, Linda, was born, and then to Colorado in 1949.  Her youngest sister Kay came along after the family had settled in Nederland.

Patricia was preceded in death by both her parents, her first husband Donald Morse, and her cousin Jean.  She is survived by her second husband, Leslie Beard; daughters Christina Audrey (Jeff), Andrea Anderson-Mann, stepson David May, stepdaughters Tamara Morse (Eric Hill), and Shelly Walter; her younger sisters, Linda Krug(Bob) and Kay Gross(Doug).  She has 4 nephews and 3 nieces,  and last but certainly not least she had 11 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.

Patricia’s artistic talent was evident at the young age of 12 when she began drawing and doodling.  She sold her first painting for $7 at a sidewalk art show when she was 18.  Early in her high school years her talent earned her many merits.  In 1960, 62’, and 63’ she received Certificates of Merits from Scholastic Art Awards for State of Colorado regional exhibitions.  These works were then judged for the National High School Art Exhibition.  In 1963 she received an Honorable Mention for the National Achievement in Art in the Mixed Media classification.  After graduating high school, she attended Colorado State University for a year with a major in Fine Arts and transferred to CU Boulder for night classes.  Shortly after that she began working for Joslin’s Department Store in Denver, starting off as a copy writer and doing other admin work, and then eventually working full time as a freelance copy writer for Joslin’s from 1973-1979.  Throughout that time, she was always working as a professional artist, working from her home art studio in Nederland Colorado.  In her own words describing her art she said, “My main endeavors have been concentrated on color exploration and developing a style which is pleasing to me.  I believe in strong design and often instill a graphic quality that sets my style apart from others.  Experimentation with paints and papers allows me the freedom of developing a fresh approach to my subject matter.  I keep most of my themes lighthearted, leaving something to the imagination."  She wanted to get her viewers involved, in her words “The unsaid allows the imagination to wander…the conclusion is up to the individual."

Patricia’s work was entered into many shows, some of them were juried.  Her awards were numerous, some of the highlights include 1st place at Colorado State Fair, 1970; Winners Art Show, 1st place and Best of Show, 1970; 1st place and Best of Show at Ouray Art Festival, 1970, 1st place 1972; 1st place Watercolor 1973 and 1st place Mixed Media at Cinderella City Art Show.  Her artwork was shown in many galleries throughout Colorado, Wyoming, and in New York.  Along with other talented artists she was part of two gallery cooperatives, the Brass Cheque in Denver and the Mustard Seed Gallery in Boulder.  Some of her permanent collections were at Martin Marietta, Denver; First National Bank in Boulder, Golden and Cheyenne Wyoming; University National Bank, Denver; Empire Savings, several branches in Colorado; Van Schaack Realty, Denver; Mountain Bell, Denver; Johns Manville World Headquarters, Denver; Boettcher Foundation, Colorado Springs.

Over the years she experimented with many different mediums and artistic styles, her talent was so incredibly broad that anything she tried, she almost surely excelled in.  Of course, to her discerning eye many of them weren’t quite right in one way or another.  Maybe it was the colors or possibly the lines weren’t right, or the mane on the lion didn’t flow the way she envisioned.  In which case she would just flip over her canvas and start on the other side again. To her family, and most everyone else, they were all beautiful.  Fortunately, we have many unfinished pieces and finished pieces that will serve as visual reminders of her forever.

When she wasn’t painting, she was busy being a mom and dressing her two daughters as identical twins while also being a loving wife.  Her first husband Don and she were avid sports fan of their daughters Christina and Annie, and rarely ever missed a game.  She volunteered for school events and in the community.  She enjoyed nature, camping and road trips with the family.  She had a sense of humor and loved joking around with her family.

After her first husband passed away in 2014, she remarried Leslie Beard, her high school sweetheart.  They had grand plans to travel and get to know one another again.  Unfortunately, her health did not allow them to do nearly as much as they wanted to.  Leslie took good care of her and loved her unconditionally.  It is with a lot of sadness that they didn’t get to spend as much together as they wanted, but they cherished their time together and created some wonderful memories.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Children’s Heart Foundation in honor or her grandson Logan Audrey. Please visit https://www.childrensheartfoundation.org/ for more information.

P.S. If there was a Save the Pasta foundation that would be an option too as she did love her pasta.

P.S.S. If there was a National Make Food So Spicy It Burns Your Tongue Off Charity; she would also be in favor of supporting that cause.
