Margaret "Marge" E. Walters

September 8, 1937 — September 16, 2022

Margaret Elizabeth (Meyer) Walters – 1937 to 2022

Marge Walters died peacefully in her sleep on September 16, 2022, at the age of 85. Marge lived an adventurous life during the most interesting period in history. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, John, her sister Barbara, her 3 children, Laura (Kris), Angela and Sean (Susan), and her 4 grandchildren, Shauna, Avery, Anna and Jack.

She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1937 and attended a small Catholic School, St. Francis de Sales, in McKees Rocks. Her mother Mary Ann was a nurse and her father Julius (Chewy) manufactured metal patterns for tools and machine parts. Like other families during that time, they ran a tab with the butcher, the grocer, and the gas station, and paid it in cash on payday. At the age of 10, Marge could take the bus downtown on her own to shop and eat lunch at Gimbels, Hornes or Kaufmann’s. She loved going to the movies with friends every week, and fondly remembers the German, Irish and Polish foods the extended family prepared. Her love of movies and great food continued throughout her life.

After school, she trained as a hairdresser and then worked for Bell Telephone. In 1958, she become a flight attendant with Continental Airlines and moved to El Paso, Texas, much to the surprise and dismay of her family and friends. She lived in a women’s boarding house, and later married John Walters, an Air Force officer and pilot.

As a military wife, Marge moved her household numerous times. The family lived in the U.K., South Carolina, Alabama, Nebraska, Virginia, Arizona, New York, and then retired in Texas and later, Colorado. While stationed in England, she saw many wonders, including the Big Ben, the Queen’s Jewels, and the Eiffel Tower. She and John skied in Germany. Her parents, sister and other family enjoyed visiting.

She enrolled her 3 children in swimming lessons, swim teams, diving teams, gymnastics, field hockey, basketball, baseball, soccer, piano lessons, and girl scouts. She brought snacks for the team, assisted the coach, and yelled encouragements from the sidelines. Her house was where the neighborhood kids gathered. Everyone was welcome and everyone was fed with a smile.

In addition to running a busy household, she also worked in various jobs over the years – selling magazines by phone, working at a swimming pool store, a Southwest Artists Store, and a Sears Appliance Parts Center. Marge and John took several cross-country motorcycle trips, riding with their daughter Angela, brother-in-law Ron and their spouses.

Marge and John moved to Denver in 2005 to live near their children. She had a close relationship with each of her children, and spending time with her kids and grandkids was one of her greatest joys. She also found a wonderful group of loyal girlfriends and cherished every minute she could spend with them.

Marge was extremely intelligent and well-informed and could engage in almost any world issue with ease. She also loved sports and was very knowledgeable about football, basketball, March Madness, the Olympics, and other sports. She loved TV and movies of all kinds, even science fiction and Marvel Universe pictures. She enjoyed learning about history, current events and culture, reading, researching her ancestry, cooking and collecting recipes, and spending time with friends and family.

All will remember her great sense of humor. She would engage everyone she met with a kind word or a joke. Marge had a rare gift. She was loving, smart, independent, optimistic, and had a strong faith and work ethic. She leaves family and friends who respected and adored her.

Marge was a member of the Pax Christi Catholic Community in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. There will be a funeral mass on Friday, September 23, 2022, at 11:00 am at Pax Christi, 10675 Jaguar Drive, Lone Tree, Colorado. A luncheon will follow.
