Margaret "Dolly " Powers

On Wednesday, April 28th, 2021, Margaret “Dolly” Powers, loving mother, sister, aunt, and Tutu, passed away at the age of 74.

Dolly was born in Ashland, Pennsylvania, on January 1, 1947, and lived around the world as an Air Force brat, including in Japan, which was one of the family’s longest tours.

After her father retired, the family returned to Kailua, Oahu, in 1964, where she met Stanley Powers, Jr. at Hickam AFB. They married on September 3, 1966, and raised two children, Tammy and Jim. The family eventually settled in Colorado after Stan’s retirement from the Air Force in 1988. Being married to the Air Force, Dolly had a variety of jobs throughout her life and retired from United Airlines in Denver in 2011.

Dolly had a passion for travel and her Hawaiian heritage. She embraced the Hawaiian culture: hula, Hawaiian music, honus (Hawaiian green sea turtle), and of course, the cuisine - especially malasadas and poi (an acquired taste). She also loved dogs, especially Maxi Bear, and her old Camero.

Tutu (Hawaiian for “Grandmother”) loved to talk story and shared many memories of living in Japan, Portugal, Italy, and Hawaii. No visit with Tutu would be complete without coffee and a plethora of cookie choices, such as Oreos and Chips Ahoy. Dolly loved to play card games with her family, especially Wizard and Golf...but you had to be on your guard for her “accidental” cheating.

Dolly was also a smack-talking fantasy football player.  She liked to “steal” players from her sister and harass us with her rhymes. As Tough Tutu, she won the family trophy in 2012 and 2015.

Dolly was a devoted Broncos fan and, much to the chagrin of her husband and daughter, an avid Colorado Rockies fan. Tutu was an extraordinary grandmother to her grandson, Evan, and her granddaughter, Paige. She showered them with love and lots and lots of gifts.  Tutu shared her insatiable sweet tooth with Evan and Paige, she made sure she was well-stocked for their visits.

Dolly was preceded in death by her husband Stan and her son, Jim, and is survived by her daughter Tammy, sister Patti (Mike) Spoelman, nieces Cory (Talisha) Spoelman, Samantha (TJ) Hovel, daughter-in-law Julie (Ben) Glathar and grandchildren, Evan and Paige. Dolly is also survived by beloved family members in Hawaii, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Florida.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Dolly on Saturday 8th, May 2021 at 11am

COVID-19 restrictions include: required masks and socially distanced seating. Due to these restrictions’ attendance is limited to family members and invited guests.  The service will be live-streamed and recorded.
