Margaret Joan Cohen (Joan) died at the age of 100 in Centennial, Colorado of natural causes.

Joan was born Christmas day to Viola Cotton and William Shuman at home in Rixford, Pennsylvania.  She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leonard, her son William Kahle, and her brothers and their wives Jack (Isabel) Shuman and Bill (Helen) Shuman.

Joan was raised in Rixford and attended Otto Township schools and Bucknell University.  She loved being a hairdresser and she had a shop in her mother’s home.  She enjoyed singing in the choir and was very committed to her Christian faith.  She had two boys from her first marriage and many lifelong friends from the Rixford area.

Joan married Leonard Cohen of Buffalo New York in 1950. They resided in Bradford, Pennsylvania until 1963 when they moved to Colorado. Joan and Leonard had two daughters. They were married 66 years until his death in 2014. She is survived by her children: Lori Cohen, Lynn (Steve) Hinkle both of Centennial, Colorado and Jay Paul (Jackie) Kahle of Duke Center, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren: Stephanie (Gayor) Geller, Courtney (Travis) Taylor, Jeffrey Hinkle and Sarah Kahle. She loved her six great grandchildren who knew her as Gramma Joan.

Leonard and Joan lived in Aurora, Colorado for forty years before moving to Caley Ridge Assisted Living facility in 2011. Joan was very involved in her church, Cherry Creek Presbyterian and Cherry Creek Women’s Club.  She never forgot to tell people she was born on Christmas day and that made her very special.  She celebrated her 100th birthday on her last Christmas surrounded by her daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her friends and care givers at Caley Ridge.

The family is very grateful to the staff of Caley Ridge and to Agape Hospice for the love and continual care they gave to Joan in her final days. The family held a private service prior to burial at Fort Logan National Cemetery where she will join her husband, Leonard who served in World War II.

Memorial contributions are welcome to Agape Hospice.
