Karen Michie

December 8, 1953 — January 9, 2021

Lakewood

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and educator, Karen Wintheiser Michie joined the heavenly angels on January 9, 2021 following a lengthy illness. Born December 8, 1953 to Harold and Ardelle Wintheiser, Karen lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana until 1958 when the family moved to Colorado. Karen graduated from Englewood as the high school's salutatorian and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Vocational Home Economics, and Textiles and Clothing and Masters of Education in Vocation with emphasis in Vocational Home Economics Education, both from Colorado Sate University.

During her first teaching assignment at Fort Collins High School, Karen had the good fortune to meet her co-teacher's brother, Keith Michie. It's no secret that sister Carol takes some credit in their union. Karen and Keith married in 1979 and forged a harmonizing partnership that piloted them in raising two exceptional sons, Kenneth and Kurtis, completing remodeling projects, championing each other in educational careers, inspiring and guiding grandchildren, and exploring other countries with fascinating travels.

From an early age Karen's curiosity for the world and attention to detail led her toward adventure, triumphs, and creative handiworks. Throughout her life, she expressed her kind heart and intuitive nature in connections with friends, family, co-workers and students. Despite the diagnosis of lupus as a young adult, Karen maintained an active life, tending to the blossoming garden, enjoying the outdoors on numerous hikes with hiking friends, and exploring the country sides of Poland, Hungary, Scotland, England, and Czech Republic with her husband, Keith.

Interested in family heritage, Karen researched family histories as far back as the 1700's and charted the genealogy for the Wintheiser and Michie families. Friends and family members marveled at Karen's creations, whether a quilted piece, stitchery wall-hanging, or unique dessert. Her faith sustained her in times of trial, and she maintained loyalty to her church in service and in giving to those in need.

Karen is survived by her husband Keith; sons Kenneth (Kristin), and Kurtis (Dana); brother Robert (Peggy) Wintheiser; sisters Jan Hockenberry (Bernard), and Sue Wintheiser; plus four grandsons and one granddaughter. Karen's parents, Ardelle and Harold preceded her in death.

Karen will be remembered for her precious humor, her vision and creativity, her compassion in doing for others, and most vividly, her pride in being a wife, mother, and grandmother and educator.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Jude Catholic Church with burial at Golden Cemetery.
