Hazel Philbrick

December 16, 1930 — February 27, 2021

Hazel Philbrick passed peacefully at her home in Aurora from pulmonary hypertension on February 27, 2021 at the age of 90.

Hazel was born and raised in rural Maryland. She was the oldest of three daughters, lost her father Edwin Mullinix, at an early age and was raised by her loving mother, Lula Mullinix.  Following high school, Hazel moved to Baltimore to attend Baltimore Business College where she began a long career in bookkeeping. In 1955, she married Gerard (Jerry) Philbrick whom she met at a dance while he was in the Navy and stationed nearby. Hazel and Jerry built a home together in Ellicott City, where they raised two children, Cathy and Mark.

Hazel got involved in the activities of her children, from making costumes for majorettes and musicals to trekking with Boy Scouts on their adventures. That led her to co-found the Howard County Summer Theatre, a group that brought youth and adults the opportunity to perform in local theatre.  Her organizational and money management melded perfectly with her sewing talents and she made lifelong friends from the experience.

In 1981, Hazel and Jerry both retired and made the move to Colorado to follow their children and grandchildren, who were thrilled to have the entire family back together in one place.   Not one to sit still, Hazel worked at Aurora Hills Middle Schools as the school bookkeeper until retirement.

A few years after Jerry passed, Hazel made the move to Heather Gardens and once again got involved.  She was the building treasurer for many years, did income tax for seniors through AARP and was always ready to help – especially when it concerned finances.  Hazel loved reading, board and card games, sewing, puzzles and the Colorado Rockies as well as a good trip “up the hill”.

Hazel is survived by her children, Cathy (Jim) and Mark (Robin), Grandchildren Whitney (B.J.) and Eric (Bailey), and four wonderful great-grandchildren, Lena, Evie, Rockwell and Zinnia. She will be greatly missed by all.

Hazel will join Jerry at Ft. Logan National Cemetery.
