Harry Williams

April 16, 1923 — November 17, 2020

Harry M. Williams (HMW) was born on April 16, 1923 in Des Moines, Iowa, as the third son of a prominent Iowa family.

His father was the most decorated medical officer from Iowa in WWI, one great uncle was Governor of Iowa and later a U.S. Senator and another great uncle was Dean of the Drake Law School.

The Williams family moved to Leavenworth, Kansas, at the start of the great depression where Dr. Williams was Chief of Surgery at the V.A. Hospital.

HMW graduated from high school in Leavenworth and entered the Marine Corps thereafter.  He did his boot camp and training in San Diego and was discharged when WWII ended 3 ½ years later having attained the rank of Staff Sargent.

HMW graduated from the University of Washington in 1951 with a B.S. degree as a Mathematics major.

He graduated in 1942 from the Harvard Law School with a L.L.B.  His older brother, Wallace, also a Harvard Law School graduate, was killed in France in the Battle of St. Lo.  His other brother, Frank, flew Marine fighters in WWII and the Korean War.  When Frank died in 1968, he was the Public Defender of Orange County, California.

HMW came to Denver in 1953 to practice law and was a member of the Law Club, the American Bar Association, the Colorado Bar Association and the Denver Bar Association.

He is survived by his three children, Sarah, Thomas and Wallace; his grandchildren Christopher and Daniel.  He divorced his first wife in 1980 and married Julie K. Johnston on July 18, 1992.  Julie survives him.

HMW was retained counsel by Capitol Federal Savings & Loan Association of Denver for over twenty years.

He retired shortly after Capitol Federal Savings was taken over by the RTD.

HMW took up flying after his retirement but he played volleyball most of his adult life in Denver.  He was on a team representing Colorado that won the gold medal at the Senior Olympics in St. Louis in 1989 and he attended most of the Senior games ever since as well as most of the National Volleyball Tournaments on teams representing Colorado.
