Gordon Zobell

April 4, 1927 — September 1, 2021

Denver, Colorado

Gordon N. ZoBell passed away in Denver, Colorado on September 1, 2021. He was born April 4, 1927, in Lakeview, Utah County, Utah. He was the fifth child of Harry and Catherine Nielsen Zobell. Gordon lived and died with a joyous heart.

Gordon grew up in Utah, attending local schools. He and his friends had many adventures, including ice skating across Utah Lake and bringing an organ home in a wagon. He left school at 18 to join the navy with his friend Laverle Johnson. Gordon served in the Pacific Theater during the last days of World War II. He visited the Philippines, Japan, and Hawaii. After the war, he returned to school and graduated from LDS Seminary and Lincoln High School. He then attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

Gordon was called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was set apart by Uncle Albert l. Zobell in October 1950 to serve in the Eastern States Mission. He was honorably released in 1952.

For a time, Gordon had a print shop in Provo, Utah, then he moved to Denver Colorado to work for the Colorado State Printing Department. He lived for a time in the Molly Brown House.

Gordon was an avid hiker and traveler, who loved exploring new places and meeting new people. He Climbed Utah’s Mt Timpanogos 29 times. He traveled widely in the United States, Mexico, and Central America. He was a great storyteller and teacher with a wonderful, dry sense of humor. He had many, many friends and helped countless people. He acquired several properties and was frugal in his personal life. His goal was to help others, no matter the cost to himself. He served with his time, his money, and his music.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Catherine Leonora (Nielsen) Zobell; his brothers Vayne (Tess Taylor), Leonard (Vera Wheeler), Bazil Zobell, and his sister Wanda Catherine (Arzie) Mitchell; also various nieces and nephews.

Gordon is survived by many nieces and a nephew. Among them are Lynda M (Scott) Jessop; Aleta Z (Malon) Kiggins; Nancy Z (Scott deceased) Slater; Maren Z (Rodney/Butch) Kurzer; Kathleen Z (Neil) Maycock; and Steven L (Evelyn/Kathie Somppi) Zobell. There are also many cousins, great and great-great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank those who helped Gordon. They are especially grateful for John Harris, Ryan Ormond, the members of the Denver Colorado City Park Ward, and the staff of Sunrise at Cherry Creek.
