Francis Houchen

September 10, 1933 — June 23, 2022

Lakewood, Colorado

Francis was born and raised in Beaver Crossing, Nebraska. His childhood was filled with youthful antics and adventure as he explored his rural home.

After high school, Francis attended the University of Nebraska with a focus on religious studies from the Cotner School of Religion.

While attending the university Francis met the lovely Lorena, and the couple was married in 1955. Together they moved to Lexington, Kentucky where Francis attended Lexington Theological Seminary receiving his Master of Divinity degree.

Francis and Lori served Disciples of Christ Christian Churches in Nebraska, Indiana, Utah, and Colorado.

A life-long learner, Francis pursued his doctoral degree in the study of death and dying at the University of Northern Colorado in 1979. Upon completion, Francis worked as Chaplain of Hospice of Metro Denver and AMC Research Hospital. He gave peace, care, and compassion to those approaching the end of life and their loved ones. This work gave Francis the greatest sense of fulfillment.

Upon retirement, Francis and Lori enjoyed adventures of travel both by land and sea. They traveled throughout North America in their motor home, embracing the beauty of Canada, the delight of Baja Mexico, and the landscapes in between. One of their most memorable retirement experiences occurred while traveling in the Virgin Islands. Lori chartered a sailboat in St. Thomas as a gift to Francis. The couple experienced 10 days of warm gentle water and magnificent secluded beaches while listening to the music of the steel drums from shore. On starlit nights, they rested quietly in the cockpit of the boat. The joyful memory never left them. It is their family's wish that in death they may once again sail away.

Just as Francis served those in their last days, he received a peaceful, compassionate passing at Lutheran Collier Hospice in Wheat Ridge Colorado.

Left to mourn and yet rejoice in Francis's just reward are his daughter Caroline, son-in-law Richard, daughter-in-law Pattie, three remarkable granddaughters: Amie, Hayley, and Kristie, (spouse Curtis), two delightful great-grandchildren: Lillie and Paxton, and many others whose hearts he touched.
