Constance Joy Dyk

March 27, 1946 – February 27, 2021

Constance “Connie” Joy Dyk was born on March 27, 1946 in Helena, Montana.  In 1948, Connie was adopted by Henry and Ellen Alberda and moved to their dairy farm in Manhattan, MT.  During her early years, she spent a great deal of her time helping raise her eight brothers and sisters, learning to cook, and working around the house.  Connie greatly enjoyed horseback riding in her spare time especially on her horse Nugget.  Connie attended Manhattan Christian schools, where she would meet her future husband, Eldon Dyk. They began dating in 1962.

Connie graduated from Manhattan Christian School in 1964 and briefly attended Dordt College in Sioux Center, IA.  On August 2, 1966, she and Eldon were married in Manhattan, Montana and returned to Iowa in the fall for Eldon to finish his studies at Dordt.  During that time, she took care of children to support their new lives in a small trailer on campus.  The marriage that began in that small, drafty trailer in northwest Iowa would continue for nearly 55 years.

In 1967, Eldon was offered a job to teach science at Denver Christian High School and they packed up their belongings and headed west to the city which they would call home for more than half a century.  Her early work was putting her excellent typing skills to use for students at DU and doing part time work at the Fashion Bar in the University Hills Mall.

In August of 1970, Connie and Eldon adopted their first son, Kevin.  Shortly after Eldon finished his Master’s Degree at University of Portland, Connie began work providing in-home day care.  This allowed her to be home, raising her own kids and also helped create the life she and Eldon were building together.  In September of 1973, Connie and Eldon adopted their second son, Brian.  Finally, in October of 1977, Connie and Eldon adopted their daughter, Joy.  Over the course of the next twenty two years, Connie ran her day care business, raised her family, kept her home, and supported Eldon in his work.

In the summer of 1990, Connie was moved to find her birth family and successfully found them in Storm Lake, Iowa.  There she found her birth mother, Mavis Kirkpatrick, Mavis’ husband Wayne, as well as half-sister Tess, and half-brother Kerry, half-brother Terry, half sister Karen.  Over the course of that year, Connie and Eldon travelled many times to Storm Lake to establish a strong relationship with this new extended family.

After 22 years of in home day care, and with her children grown and moving out, Connie made the move to working outside of the home.  She began working as a receptionist at the pediatrician that helped care for her kids. She then worked for several years in the podiatrist office.  In 2001, she began working a job that she truly loved as the receptionist at her beloved Eastern Hills Community Church.  She continued working at EHCC for a period of ten years before heading into retirement with Eldon.

In retirement, Connie stayed active and she and Eldon purchased several motorhomes from which they travelled much of the West. Connie especially enjoyed their time at Lake George, Colorado where they spent many summers.  During the winters, Connie and Eldon would spend much of their time in Mesa, Arizona.  Connie especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow up and could be seen cheering them on at sports events, enjoying numerous band concerts, watching games and programs, and just spending quality Sunday afternoons with them in the house.  Family, friends, and faith were the centerpieces of Connie’s life.

Connie was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 27, 2021.  She is survived by her husband, Eldon, her son Kevin Dyk (and Nicole Dyk), Brian Dyk (and Dylan Newman), and Joy Silvia all from the Denver, CO region.  Additionally, she is survived by siblings Rich Alberda (and Carole), Mark Alberda, Laurie Grosskopf, Dan Alberda, and Sheila Feenstra (and Darrell Feenstra).  Finally, she is survived by her grandchildren, Riley Newman, Emerson Newman, Elliot Newman, Russell Dyk (and Cassandra), and Christopher Dyk (and fiancé Jemmie Harrouff) and by many other family members and friends.

The celebration of Connie’s life will take place Thursday, March 4, 2021 at 10:00 am at Eastern Hills Community Church and will also be livestreamed at http://boxcast.tv/view/memorial-service-798790 .  In lieu of flowers, the family would ask for donations to the Marketplace pantry at Eastern Hills Community Church in Aurora, Colorado.
