Charles Overturf

February 28, 1951 — May 16, 2022

Castle Rock, Colorado

Charles Edgar Overturf, favorably known as Turf, died peacefully in his home in Castle Rock, Colorado on May 16, 2022.  Turf, age 71, was born on February 28, 1951 in San Bernardino, California.

In 1969 Turf graduated from St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, CA.  He then went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree with a double major in accounting and finance from the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1973.  While in college he was involved in the ROTC program, and after graduation he became an officer in the United States Navy.  He served with the Navy for five years, which included tours during the Vietnam War, and was honorably discharged in 1978.  While stationed in Virginia Beach, VA, Turf met the love of his life, Shelley Kay (formerly Berglund) of Wilmar, MN.  They married in 1975, and were together until the moment of his passing.  In 1981 Turf and family moved to Denver, Colorado where he had a long career with Lockheed Martin (formerly Martin Marietta), working on top-security aerospace projects.  Turf will forever be remembered for his college antics, as well as his love of travel, spicy food, football, music, classic movies, and of course, his Tarzan yell.

Turf is survived by his wife, Shelley, and their three daughters and their families: Michelle Overturf of Lakewood, CO, Elizabeth (“Liz”) and Ryan Smith of Castle Rock, CO, and grandchildren Ryder and Georgina Smith, and Kathryn (“Katie”) and Dan Lawhorne of Cleveland, VA, and granddaughter Vada Lawhorne.  He is also survived by his mother, Anna Overturf, as well as several siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Overturf.

A celebration of Turf’s life will be held at the Horan and McConaty funeral home in Centennial, CO (5303 E County Line Rd, Centennial, CO 80122) on Saturday June 4, 2022 at 1:00 pm.

The family wishes to thank Compassus hospice services and the University of Colorado Health Sciences ‘Science Care’.  Memorials in honor of Turf may be made to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation (npcf.us).
