Bernice Elizabeth Broadstreet

1923 — January 1, 2020

Bernice Elizabeth Tippett Maloney Broadstreet, age 97, died peacefully on October 17, 2020 at the Gardens at Columbine, her assisted living home in Littleton, Colorado, in the presence of loving family members and under the excellent care of Gardens staff and Divine Hospice and Palliative Care professionals.

A Colorado mountain girl, “Bernie” was born on January 11, 1923 in Red Cliff, Colorado. She became a war bride at 19, a mother at 21, and a world traveler and mother of eight while helping her Air Force husband serve his country from 1942-1964. Retired from military life, she continued using her many creative skills as homemaker for her husband and children, hostess extraordinaire and later caregiver to many relatives and friends. She enjoyed a variety of activities outside the home: Red Cross nursing aide, salesperson (Avon calling), librarian, executive secretary and interior designer. Her many hobbies included gardening, flower arranging, painting, sewing, piano and organ playing, reading and letter-writing. She was an active member of many social and service clubs, including St. Ann’s Circle, PEO, Stephen’s Ministry and the Red Hat Club.

She was known for her daily puns, exceptional memory and wit, and her fierce devotion to her family. Bernie relied on a combination of “faith and ignorance” to maintain a lifelong positive outlook, whatever challenge came her way. She had a knack for making instant friends in every setting, and she corresponded with many pen pals throughout the years and across the globe.

Bernie was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Blanche (Mayfield) Tippett, her brothers Richard Tippett and Raymond Tippett and her sister Blanche (Tippett) Sundberg Frank, her husband of 44 years, Edward Maloney, her second husband Allen Broadstreet, her daughter Carole (Maloney) Shellenberg, and her daughter-in-law Leigh-Ann (Deubler) Maloney.

Survivors include seven children: Eileen (James) Simpson of Burke, Virginia; Edward James (Peg) Maloney Jr. of Omaha, Nebraska; Richard (Patsy) Maloney of Tacoma, Washington; Michael (Cheryl) Maloney of Larkspur, Colorado; Robert (Linda) Maloney of Littleton, Colorado; Diane Maloney (Kevin Franke) of Evanston, Illinois; Patrick (Beth) Maloney of Littleton, Colorado; and son-in-law Michael Shellenberg. Additionally, her gentle influence lives on in 20 grandchildren and their spouses, 33 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild, and many appreciative nieces, nephews and friends from many generations whose lives she touched with her joyful, positive and loving spirit.

Mom, Grandmaloney, Oma, Grambo, Aunt Bernie, Easter Bernie...all who knew her loved her deeply. We celebrate her long and fruitful life, and will continue to draw upon her humor, courage and unconditional love.
