Alfonso L. Vigil

Alfonso L. "Butch” Vigil, age 71, a resident of Thornton, CO passed away peacefully on May 6, 2020 after a long battle with cancer. He was born May 8, 1948 to Theresa S. Vigil and Fred D. Vigil, Sr., in Rock Springs, WY.

Alfonso is survived by his brother, Fred D. Vigil, Jr.; sisters, Sadie Gonzalez (Willie), Nancy Martinez (Ron), and Barbara Lucero (Rudy); 4 sons, Alfonso L. Vigil, Jr. (Sophia), Wayne M. Thompson (Gladys), Kirk A. Thompson (Cynthia), and William L. Thompson; 3 daughters, Cynthia Clark (Daniel), Debra Gasaway (Jim), and Sherry H Vigil. He is also survived and loved by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Alfonso was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn D. Vigil; mother, Theresa S. Vigil; father, Fred D. Vigil Sr.; and sister, Elizabeth Vigil.

Alfonso joined the United States Army in 1967 and was stationed in Germany until his discharge in 1970. He later enlisted in the Army reserves. He was a lifetime member of the Verle Huffman VFW Post #9644.

Alfonso loved to tell stories and jokes and make everyone laugh. Nothing ever got him down and you could always count on him to lighten the mood in any situation. During his fight with cancer he would always make time to chat with other vets at the hospital and tell them to have the right frame of mind. He always stated he would "kick cancer’s butt” and he did for 8 years.

Most of his career he was a delivery driver and enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time with his kids and grandkids. When his wife, Marilyn, became ill, he retired to be her full time caregiver.

There will be a private viewing on May 11, 2020. Interment will be at Fort Logan Cemetery. 

Memorial Service will be Friday, September 11, 2020, 3:00pm at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area "A", 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, Denver.
