Winona Moritz

Winona Elaine Moritz, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and dear friend passed away on Wednesday, February 8th at the age of 86.  Winnie was a Colorado native having attended Arvada High School and the University of Colorado.   She was a Colorado girl through and through and was so proud of her home state.

Throughout her life, she was active and interested in education and philanthropic work; Winnie dedicated over 50 years to the PEO Organization and the education of women.  She lived  to give back with enthusiasm and generosity.    She was a soccer coach, Girl Scout Leader, musician, and was thoroughly involved with her kids’ schools.

Winnie was an avid skier, hiker, and tennis player for much of her life.    She “hung up” her skis only just a couple years ago.   Winnie played piano, organ, clarinet and eventually mastered the zither - a very difficult stringed instrument.  Those who were lucky enough to hear her play were the better for it.     Winnie collected and cherished friends -  within her neighborhoods, her bridge groups, book clubs, ski associations, philanthropic organizations and schools.      She loved games and was immensely competitive.   She taught her entire family how to win or lose with grace and laughter.   She also loved to travel and taught us that there was great joy in finding wonder and happiness in the unexpected.  She made us strong.

Winnie is survived by her husband, Jack, her greatest love.   They were married for over 66 years.  She had 3 children -  Michelle Dorman, Gretchen Moritz and Karl Moritz all happily married to their respective spouses- Mark Dorman, Dan Johnson, and Heather Alcott Moritz.   She deeply loved her 7 grandchildren and their spouses: Alec and Lauren Dorman, Drew Dorman, Caroline Dorman, Wesley and Erica Johnson, Nick Johnson, Luke Johnson, and Sloane Moritz.

Memorial Service will be held at Horan & McConaty located at 3101 S. Wadsworth at 2 pm, Friday, February 17th.    In lieu of flowers (which she was allergic to anyway), we know she would appreciate heartfelt donations, in her honor, to organizations where she dedicated her love, energy, and her time.
