William Edward Kinney, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026, at home, surrounded by the love of his family.
He was born in Norton, Kansas on April 14th, 1954 and raised in Blue Hill, Nebraska. He graduated from the University of Nebraska before moving to Colorado, where he began working for the railroad and met the love of his life, Mary. The two were united in marriage on November 21, 1981. They planted roots on 12 acres and together, built a life rooted in love, family, and hard work.
He went on to found Denver Intermodal Express in 1991, building it from the ground up. To him, it was never just a business- it was family. He took pride in the people he worked alongside, treating employees as his own and fostering relationships that extended far beyond the workplace. His work ethic, integrity, and loyalty left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
He was a true romantic at heart, always finding simple but meaningful ways to show his love. His greatest pride was his family, and he cherished every moment spent with them whether it was hunting, fishing, coaching sports teams, leaving little notes, or simply exchanging quick witted texts and emails. A devoted Husker fan, he rarely missed a game and found joy in cheering on all Nebraska athletics, especially football and volleyball. He was an avid knickknack collector- something his family will lovingly sort through for years to come.
He was deeply loved and a friend to all. His legacy lives on in the way we show up for one another, love our families, and take care of the people around us- just like he always did.
Bill is survived by his wife, Mary of Longmont, CO; loving children Jeremy Kinney of Hastings, NE; Aaron (Kelly) Kinney of Thornton, CO; Megan (Ben) Baer of Lincoln, NE; precious grandchildren, Emma, Abby, Ashly, Allison, Brielle, Konnor, and Maysen; Great grandson CJ Trotter; Siblings Dan (Pam) Kinney of Council Bluffs, IA; Melody Knapp of Kerrville, TX; Sister-in-law Lisa Kinney of Lincoln, NE; as well as many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Elvis and Lucille Kinney; brother Jerry Kinney; sister Celeste Munsinger; and brother-in-law John Knapp.
A funeral will take place on May 31st at 2:00 PM at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home 9998 Grant Street, Thornton, CO 80229. A Celebration of Life will follow from 4:00-7:00 PM at Balistreri Vineyards 1946 E 66th Ave, Denver, CO.
