Dr. Wheeler T. Daniels, MD, lovingly known as “Dr. Dan” and affectionately called “Wheels” by his sister, passed away peacefully at the age of 87, leaving behind a legacy of service, innovation, and a life richly lived.
Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Dr. Dan carried a strong sense of purpose from an early age. He pursued his education at Dartmouth and went on to earn his medical degree from Temple University, setting the foundation for a distinguished career in medicine. As an orthopedic surgeon, he spent 30 years practicing in Montana, where he became known not only for his skill and compassion, but also as a pioneer—among the first in the state to perform hip and knee replacements, improving the lives of countless patients.
He proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Army, and continued that lifelong commitment to service well beyond his military years. He volunteered extensively with the VA, offered his time at Ground Zero in the aftermath of September 11, and later gave compassionate care through hospice work. He also supported causes close to his heart, including volunteering with the Dumb Friends League (now Humane Colorado), reflecting his love for animals and community.
A gifted mentor, Dr. Dan was especially admired by third-year medical students, who appreciated his steady guidance, wit, and generosity in teaching.
Outside of his profession, he found deep joy in fly fishing, often seeking out quiet waters and peaceful moments in nature. He loved to travel and embraced adventure throughout his life, always curious about the world around him.
He is survived by his longtime partner, Becky; his sister, Diane, his four children, Willis, Tobi, Lisa, and Jennifer; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry forward his memory.
Dr. Dan will be remembered for his dedication to healing, his pioneering contributions to medicine, his generous spirit, and his enduring love for family, learning, and the outdoors.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
