Walter Carl Spreng

With sad hearts, we announce that our father, (Walter) Carl Spreng (75), passed away on 16 October 2026 while being treated for interstitial lung disease.

Carl was born just after his twin sister, Catherine, on 16 February 1951 in Waynesville, MO. Carl and his sisters spent their childhood summers visiting family in Ohio, Utah, California, Germany, or Switzerland. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which guided his life and provided him with many opportunities to serve others. He served a mission for the Church in Austria where he made lasting friendships. Carl followed after his parents and became a geologist, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Geology at BYU. He started his career in oil, gas, and mineral exploration and eventually transitioned to work for the State of Colorado as an Environmental Protection Specialist for the Department of Public Health and Environment.

While working in Grand Junction, Colorado, he met his eternal companion, our mother, Janice Campbell. They were engaged on Valentine’s Day 1976 to be married three months later on the 14th of May. Carl and Janice had four children, Jennifer, Logan, Matthew, and Austin, each of whom try to carry on their legacy of love and service. Our parents were loyal to one another and after losing Janice to COVID in December 2020, Carl’s eyes were only for her. COVID left our father scarred emotionally and physically, and the scarring eventually claimed him.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Wealthy, by his sister Lillian, and by his wife, Janice. He leaves behind his twin sister, Catherine, his four children, Jennifer, Logan, Matthew, and Austin, and his four grandsons, Jacob, Nikolas, Isaiah, and Denver.
