Virgil LeRoy Klawitter

Virgil LeRoy Klawitter, 87, of Lakewood, Colo., died at his home on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 16th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Denver with burial at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Horan & McConaty-South Wadsworth, Lakewood. Virgil was born to Martin G. and Kathryn E. (Benck) Klawitter in Norfolk, Nebraska on December 3, 1929. He was baptized, confirmed, and instructed through elementary school at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He graduated from Norfolk High School in 1947, and was a life-long member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1644 in Norfolk, Nebraska. Corporal Klawitter served in the US Army from September, 1951 through August of 1953, primarily assigned to the 7844 ORD STK CON in Germany. Mr. Klawitter married Lois Elaine Peters at St. Paul’s Lutheran on November 8, 1953. Mr. Klawitter and his family lived in Norfolk until he sold his interest in the former Economy Market in 1969. The Norfolk VFW Post #1644 now resides in the former Economy Market location. After working for the former Hinky Dinky Grocery Company, Treasure Island (J.C. Penney), and Supermarkets Interstate in Kentucky (both tenures in Louisville), Virginia, and Florida, the Klawitters moved to the Denver, Colorado area in 1985, where Mr. Klawitter ran the Gourmet Meat and Sausage Shop in Lakewood. He sold the shop and retired from the meat business in 2001. Virgil was a life-long Nebraska Cornhuskers fan, became an ardent Denver Broncos fan, and for all of his life, even until his final days, loved the music of Lawrence Welk. He read the daily newspaper, regardless of his residence, from front to back page every day as long as he was able, and watched untold college and professional football games, and Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs games - to the consternation of his wife and daughter! In 2003, Virgil and Lois celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with family and friends at Trinity Lutheran Church in Denver. In 2013, they celebrated their 60th Anniversary with an open house at their home. This would be their last anniversary celebrated together. Virgil Klawitter was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; his parents, Martin and Kay; his sibling, Carol Ann (Klawitter) Staver; his brother-in-law, Lloyd Staver; his niece, Linda Staver; and his son-in-law, Timothy F. Crisman. Virgil is survived by his daughter, Jane Crisman, of Lakewood, Colorado. Memorials may be made in Mr. Klawitter’s name to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1644, 316 W.
