Thomas Matthew Carroll III, 90, of Lakewood, Colorado, a member of the Colorado School of Mines Sports Hall of Fame, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by love.
Born on July 4, 1935, in Denver, Tom was the first of seven children born to Thomas and Mary Carroll. He grew up in south Denver, where he spent his childhood playing ball, looking after his younger siblings, serving as an altar boy, and developing a lifelong love of sports and faith.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mary Carroll; his sister, Mary Ellen "Babe" (O'Dea) Anderson; and his brother, Terry Carroll. He is survived by his siblings, Mike (Colleen) Carroll, Judy (Larry) Blackford, Dan (Suzie) Carroll, and Trisha Miller.
He attended St. Francis High School, where he excelled academically and athletically. His success in the classroom and on the playing field led him to Colorado School of Mines, where he graduated in 1960 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. A multi-sport athlete, Tom lettered in football, baseball, basketball, and boxing, and was later inducted into the Colorado School of Mines Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He remained a proud and devoted alumnus throughout his life, often seen wearing his Mines gear with pride.
After graduation, Tom began a successful career as a Professional Engineer, working for several independent oil production companies. He was respected throughout his career for his intelligence, integrity, and strong work ethic.
In October 1961, Tom married the love of his life, Sharon (Baumert) Carroll. Together they shared nearly 65 years of marriage built on faith, devotion, and unconditional love. They were blessed with two sons, Thomas (Lisa) Carroll and Stephen Carroll. Tom was a loving and supportive father who led by quiet example and unwavering encouragement.
He was especially proud of is grandchildren, Thomas (Jiana) Carroll and Jessica (Colin) Sprague. He was also a devoted great-grandfather to Thomas and Jiana’s son Beau. Tom cherished every opportunity to watch his family grow and thrive. Whether it was football, baseball, basketball, softball, or cheerleading, he rarely missed a chance to cheer them on from the sidelines.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Tom loved coaching young athletes and was always willing to lend a helping hand as an assistant coach. Even after his coaching days were over, he remained a devoted supporter from the stands. His grandchildren's accomplishments, perseverance, and growth brought him immeasurable pride and joy.
Tom's faith, family, and friendships were the foundation of his life. He was a devout Catholic who attended Mass daily and lived his faith through humility, kindness, and service to others. His example of devotion to God and family will continue to guide future generations.
Those who knew him will remember a man who could always be counted on to be wearing his Colorado School of Mines gear, a cookie in hand, a newspaper nearby, and a witty remark ready to share.
Tom will be remembered for his strong character, competitive spirit, humility, deep faith, and profound devotion to his family. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the family he loved so dearly.
A Funeral Mass celebrating Tom's life will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church.
