Thomas Anthony Hartmann

January 26, 1958 — November 7, 2025

Broomfield, Colorado

Thomas Anthony Hartmann was born on January 26, 1958, to Robert “Bob” and Betty Lou Hartmann and grew up in Arvada, Colorado. As a boy, Tom filled his days with movement and adventure. He wrestled, played football, and even gave the accordion a brief try. He always kept life interesting for those around him. As a teenager, he enjoyed a bit of harmless mischief and plenty of good times with friends.

Tom was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1973, beginning a lifelong devotion to his faith. In 1973, Tom met the love of his life, Carla, sparking a partnership that would define the rest of his years.

Tom graduated from Arvada High School in 1976 and soon left home to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lima, Peru, from 1977 to 1979. The mission shaped his character and strengthened the compassion and dedication he carried with him throughout his life.

He returned home and married his sweetheart, Carla (Anderson), on January 4, 1980. Their family grew with the arrival of their son, Matthew, in August 1983, and their daughter, Stephanie “Stevie,” in August 1986. Tom loved being a father. He would do anything for his kids. Whether it was coaching their sports teams, attending their games or concerts Tom believed it was important to be present in his children’s lives. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family on yearly family vacations. The Hartmann’s traveled the United States in search of the best Amusement Parks or Water Parks to attend together. Days were often crammed with as many activities as possible which often included swimming with his kids in the hotel pool. As his kids grew older, he continued to enjoy traveling with Carla and particularly loved visiting the Northwest.

Tom earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Colorado in 1984. In 1985 he entered the Police Academy and began his lifelong career with the Broomfield Police Department. From 1985 until his retirement in 2021, Tom dedicated thirty-five years to law enforcement. Over the course of his career, he served as an Officer, Detective, Sergeant, and Commander, and worked in a variety of units including patrol, investigations, the civil division and finished his career as the Commander over the Broomfield County Jail. He was respected for his integrity, leadership, and commitment to helping others.

Tom’s devotion to service extended beyond his professional life. He loved the gospel of Jesus Christ, serving faithfully in many church callings. He especially cherished his time as Elders Quorum President and his years serving as an assistant in the bishopric. Service wasn’t simply something he did; it was who he was.

Outside of work and church, Tom was known for his humor, his kindness, and his willingness to help. He loved a good practical joke, cheered passionately for the Denver Broncos, and rooted for the Utah Utes largely to tease his BYU-fan son and daughter-in-law. He found joy in helping others and in spending time with his family, who meant everything to him.

Tom passed away on November 7, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He is survived by his wife Carla, his son, Matthew Hartmann, and daughter-in-law Jennifer, along with their children Skylar, Justin, Lizzy, and Cooper; and his daughter, Stephanie “Stevie” Clark, and son-in-law Nathan, along with their children Bailey, Milo, and Cash; his mother, Betty Lou Hartmann; his sisters, Diana Hartmann and Sonya Hartmann. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert M. Hartmann.

Tom lived a life defined by love, faith, service and humor. His family, friends, and community will forever feel his absence but will always carry the light of his example.
