Sue Hughes

December 12, 1942 — September 28, 2021

Littleton, Colorado

Sue Anne Hughes, 78, passed away on the 28th of September, 2021.  She was born in Plainfield, New Jersey on December 12, 1942 to Vernon Burroughs Fisher and Dorothy C. Fisher (nee Traudt).  She is survived by her loving daughters, Devon and Darcy Binder, her son-in-law Vahram Mateosian, her nieces Lori and Kirby Olson and her nephew Eric Olson.  She is predeceased by her parents, Vernon and Dorothy, and her sister Gail Olson.

Sue was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut and graduated from Skidmore College in 1964 with a degree in English Literature.  She married Frank M. Binder in 1965, and settled in Demarest, New Jersey two years later.  While living in Demarest, Sue was very active in her local community, volunteering for the Demarest swimming and softball programs, the local PTA, and as a troop leader for her daughters’ Brownie troop, dedicating time to local and state politics including supporting several state assemblymen, and spending time as a poll worker during elections. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters and was the first female councilwoman elected to serve on the Demarest Borough Council.  Sue was always in the stands supporting her daughters whether it be swimming or playing softball or field hockey.  She and Frank divorced in 1980 and after her daughters completed high school, she relocated to Monmouth County, New Jersey, where she worked as a Legal Secretary until she retired to Littleton, Colorado in 2014.

Sue adored dogs and horses and was an accomplished rider in her younger years.  She had a love of learning, and treasured good books, trips to the theater, spending time with friends and travelling. Her favorite place to visit was England, having made four trips there where she spent time exploring London and the countryside. She was an avid gardener and found much joy in her garden and with her flowers.  She loved all things about the Christmas holidays, from baking to decorating to presents and most of all, family.  She was a wonderful mom and friend, giving so much time and love to her daughters, family, and good friends. She will be remembered with much love and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to either the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew (please note in the field labeled “Suggest use for gift ” that your donation is being made in Memory of Sue Hughes and should be used towards Kew Gardens) or The Right Step, a therapeutic equine riding center.
