Stewart Alvin Bliss

October 8, 1933 — May 31, 2025

Stewart A. Bliss passed away on May 31, 2025, in Denver, Colorado. The son of Stewart and Inez Bliss, he was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1933. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Shirley, his daughter Rebecca Bliss, his daughter Amy Bliss and son-in-law Marco Iacoella, his niece Anne Damon and her husband Jack Martin, and family members in Alabama.

Stewart graduated from the U.S. Capitol Page School in Washington, D.C., attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree

through the ROTC program from Auburn University. He also obtained a business degree from the Colorado College.

Stewart worked for Sandia Corporation in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1957 to 1960 during which he participated in national security research, including projects in the Marshall Islands. In 1961, he joined Kaman Corporation, working in Connecticut and Colorado Springs. At his retirement after 25 years, he held the positions of executive vice president of the corporation and president of the technology and industrial subsidiaries. While at Kaman, he also directed the corporation’s mergers and acquisitions program.

From 1987 to 1993, Stewart served as Chief of Staff to the Governor of Colorado. During his tenure, Stewart was chairman of the state debt management commission and state chairman of the commission of productivity. He also served as Colorado’s representative to the World Economic Summit in Davos, Switzerland.

After leaving Colorado state government, he served on numerous boards of directors, including the Board of Directors of Kinder Morgan, Inc., the Board of Colorado State Board of Agriculture (the governing board of Colorado State University, University of Southern Colorado, and Ft. Lewis College) as President, and the Board of Directors of Colorado School of Mines.

A service will take place in summer, 2025, with the date and time to be announced.
