Robert John Goetz (Bob), age 87, passed away peacefully in his home on July 16th, surrounded by his loving family. An Englewood / Denver native, he graduated as Valedictorian from Mullen High School in 1955, earning a four-year scholarship to Regis College.
An auditor for the Department of Defense, Bob met his wife Eileen (nee Andrew) at the Air Force Accounting & Finance Center, then located at 38th & York, in 1962. The couple were married in 1963 at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in Denver. Bob & Eileen welcomed five children over the next eight years, and Bob retired from the Department of Defense in 1988. For decades he was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church, serving on committees and in the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and in retirement he also gave generously of his time volunteering at Mercy Hospital and for the Meals on Wheels program. Bob and Eileen actively participated in Christ the King’s Christian Family Movement (fondly referred to as the “Couples Group”) for decades, and they both treasured the lifetime friendships formed there.
Bob was a loving husband and father who provided a Catholic education for his children, a warm and inviting home for family and friends, and who prioritized all of Eileen’s wishes over the years. He enjoyed bowling in his younger days, and was an avid stamp and coin collector for many years. He especially enjoyed taking the entire family on vacations to all parts of the United States, and while he didn’t have the international travel bug himself, he always made sure that Eileen could enjoy as many trips abroad as she liked (and participated in a few himself). He was known for rolling on the carpet with both children and grandchildren, and presided over the living room in a succession of recliners over the years.
He is survived by his wife Eileen, their sons Patrick and David, their daughters Theresa (Brian), Mary Beth (David), and Sharon (Darren), and eight grandchildren: Ellie, Veronica, Andrew, Sam, Micaela, Patrick, Colin, and Brendan. He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Veronica (Smith) Goetz, his brother Earl, and his granddaughter Bridget.
A rosary will be said at 9:30am at Christ the King Church in Denver (830 Elm St.) on Wednesday, July 23rd, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00am. Burial services will be at 1pm at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Wheat Ridge Colorado.
While flowers are welcome at Christ the King, Bob was a supporter of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and donations to these entities would put a smile on Bob’s face.
