Richard Melvin Nelson

Richard Melvin Nelson, known to many simply as "Homer" and to others as "Dick," passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026, in Aurora, Colorado, at the age of 80.

Born on May 3, 1946, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Melvin and Jean Nelson, Richard lived a life defined by quiet generosity, good humor, unwavering integrity, and a deep love for the people around him. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose steady presence and kind spirit touched the lives of many.

Richard earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from the University of Colorado Boulder. He placed a high value on education and lifelong learning, believing that knowledge, hard work, and personal responsibility were essential foundations for a meaningful life. Shortly thereafter, in 1969, Richard answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. He served honorably in the Artillery Branch from 1969 to 1971 and was stationed in Ansbach, Germany, where he was trained on the FIM-43 Redeye missile system. Following his military service, Richard returned home and built a long and respected career in the banking and accounting industry, where he was known for his professionalism, reliability, and strong work ethic.

Richard enjoyed a quiet and simple life, finding happiness in everyday moments and the company of those he cared about most. While he never sought the spotlight, he treasured spending quality time with family and friends, creating lasting memories through laughter, conversation, and steadfast support. He was known for his gentle nature, thoughtful wisdom, and dependable presence.

One of Richard's greatest joys was his love of dogs. He had a special affection for dogs and appreciated the companionship, loyalty, and comfort they brought throughout his life. His kindness extended not only to people but also to the many pets that shared and visited his home and his heart. Many neighbors’ dogs looked for him on their walks, some still do.

Above all, Richard valued family. His gentle nature and steadfast character left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of dedication, humility, compassion, and love will continue through the lives of those who knew and loved him.  Richard's life was a testament to education, dedication, kindness, and love. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were privileged to know him.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Nelson, and his mother, Jean Nelson, both of Denver.  He is survived by his sister, Sara Oxley of Denver; his son, Scott Nelson and his wife of Clermont, Florida; his son, Steve Nelson and his wife of Aurora; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.

At Richard's request, there will be no memorial service. In honoring his wishes, both Richard and his family kindly request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to Humane Colorado (formerly the Denver Dumb Friends League), an animal welfare organization working to end pet homelessness and animal suffering.
