Richard Gorham Estes, lovingly known as Rick or “Grizz,” passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 14, 2025, after courageously facing multiple forms of cancer. Born on August 3, 1940, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, Rick lived a life defined by service, adventure, and an unwavering devotion to family and friends.
Rick grew up in Plymouth, where his adventurous spirit was evident from an early age. As a boy, he caddied at local golf courses, sparking a love for the game that lasted his entire life. After high school graduation in 1958, he worked various jobs before answering a greater calling—joining the United States Air Force.
For 20 years, Rick served with distinction, rising to the rank of Tech Sergeant. His military career took him across the world, including assignments in Thailand and Turkey. In Turkey, he explored the castles of the medieval period, experiences he would share with his then-wife and two of his children, Rik and Sean. Rick’s service was more than duty—it was an embodiment of his selfless nature and his commitment to protecting others.
After retiring from the Air Force, Rick continued to serve his country through a second career with the United States Postal Service. There, he worked in accounting and business mailing for another two decades, applying his diligence and skill to support the work of others. In his later years, he pursued his love for antiquing and collectibles, enjoying the thrill of discovery more than any profit it might bring.
Beyond his careers, Rick was most proud of his role as a father and grandfather. He leaves behind his children—Kendra Estes, Shana Estes Allen, Rik Estes, and Sean Estes—who remember him as a steady, supportive presence.
Kendra recalls their day at Dinosaur Ridge, when his patience and encouragement helped her embrace new experiences and navigate changing dreams.
Shana treasures memories of rock-hunting adventures at Mesa Verde, where their shared wonder at the beauty of nature grew into a lifelong passion she now shares with her own son.
Rick’s love reached far beyond his immediate family. He had a rare gift for embracing others as his own, often welcoming wayward friends and creating bonds that transcended blood. As Kendra expressed so beautifully: “I have never known anyone other than my dad who had such a capacity to love a stranger he knew very little about.”
Rick’s legacy shines brightly in his grandchildren—Denna Estes, Rocco Estes, Duncan Couch, and Ricky Estes—each carrying forward the lessons of kindness, curiosity, and generosity that he instilled.
His passions were as wide-ranging as his heart: rock collecting, photography, mountain hikes, antiquing, golfing, and bowling. A proud supporter of the Colorado Rockies, he delighted in cheering for his team, especially in the company of loved ones.
Rick is survived by his children and grandchildren; his sister, Linda Crosby, and his nieces and nephews: Kate Crosby, Steve Estes, Scott Estes, and Susan Estes Richards. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kendall Saunders Estes and Eleanor Louise Gorham Estes, and by his brother, Allen Estes.
Those who knew Rick will remember him for his compassion, humor, and boundless generosity. His life was rich in love and adventure, and his example continues to guide those who were fortunate enough to share in it.
