Richard E. “Dick” Carey, age 95, passed away peacefully in Englewood, Colorado, on December 16, 2025. He was a life-long resident of Denver, and graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in 1949. Following graduation, Dick was employed by the Denver Public Schools for several years after which time he proudly served in the United States Navy. After his military service, he began a long and dedicated career with the Denver Public Schools, from which he retired in 1988.
Dick lived a full and creative life. He enjoyed many hobbies including playing golf, acoustic guitar, and especially painting with watercolors, a lifetime passion. He also found great joy in listening to country, folk and bluegrass music. He was an avid reader with a deep interest in history and art.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife, Edith, whom he married in 1957; his daughters Rhonda (Larry) Holtgreive of Centennial, Colorado; Reneé Carey, of Lakewood, Colorado, and four grandchildren: Kara, Andrew, Katy and Erik. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Yvonne Carey and his sister, Claudia Hallock.
Funeral services will take place at Horan & McConaty, 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood, CO, on December 26, 2025. Public viewing will be at 10:30 am with services following at 11:00 a.m. Private burial services for the immediate family will be held at a later date at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dick’s name to Humane Colorado formerly the Dumb Friends League of Denver.
