René Cortes Heredia

René Heredia, internationally acclaimed flamenco guitarist, educator, and Denver’s beloved “Godfather of Flamenco,” passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, at the age of 87.

Born in Los Angeles in 1939 and raised within the deep traditions of his Spanish Gitano heritage, René grew up surrounded by music, dance, and family. He began performing at thirteen as part of La Familia Heredia, the family troupe formed by his parents and siblings. Flamenco was not simply an art form to him — it was the language of his home, his culture, and his identity.

René’s career carried him across the world. During his performing career, René worked alongside legendary artists, including serving as guitarist for Carmen Amaya, whose influence and artistry left a lasting imprint on his musical life. He performed for U.S. Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, and for international dignitaries including Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, Princess Noor of Jordan, and Prince Bandar of Saudi Arabia. Despite his global acclaim, Denver became his heart’s home for more than 45 years, where he built a community of students, artists, and admirers who cherished his generosity, humor, and unmistakable presence.

Throughout his life, René received numerous honors recognizing his artistic excellence and cultural impact, including the Colorado Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Denver Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Arts & Culture, the Colorado Dance Alliance Lifetime Achievement Award, and induction into the Latin Chicano Music Hall of Fame. In 2026, shortly before his passing, he was named an inaugural recipient of the Colorado Music Hall of Fame’s Community Impact Award, honoring his decades of influence as founder of the Flamenco Fantasy Dance Theater & Center for Guitar and Dance.

René was not only a performer but a devoted educator. He taught flamenco guitar and dance to generations of students, preserving the traditions of his heritage while nurturing new talent. As the last surviving member of La Familia Heredia and the youngest of eleven siblings, René carried the weight and pride of his family’s artistic legacy with him throughout his life.

He is survived by his niece, Andreana Cortés, a flamenco artist who continues the Heredia family’s lineage into the next generation. Andreana remained by his side in his final days and is committed to ensuring his story, heritage, and contributions will be preserved for future generations.

René’s final interview, given on February 12, 2026, reflected the fire, pride, and devotion that defined his life. Even in his last weeks, his thoughts returned to flamenco — the art he loved and shared so generously.

René leaves behind a legacy of artistry, mentorship, and cultural enrichment. His music, his teaching, and his indomitable spirit will continue to resonate in Denver and far beyond.
