Patricia A. Scherer, 88, passed away peacefully on July 3rd. By her side was her husband of 65 years, Michael Scherer. She is survived by an extended family; Don Scherer and his wife Cindy, Connie Scherer Schwarzkopf and her husband Marty, and Dan Scherer and his wife Sally. Four grandsons, Chad Schwarzkopf, his wife Courtney and Pat’s great grandson Kashton, Luke Schwarzkopf and his wife Cynthia, William Scherer and John Scherer.
Pat was not a native of Denver, Colorado but was married, raised a family and left a lasting impact to the community for over 60 years. Born in New Jersey, Pat grew up in a large Irish Catholic family with four brothers and a sister. Yearning to find her own place in the world, she left home and took to the skies, becoming a United Airlines stewardess and choosing Denver as her domicile. She left the “friendly skies” for marriage and to raise a family.
Always wanting to “pay it forward|” she emersed herself in philanthropic endeavors. She met a kindred spirit and the founder of The Sunshine Kids, an organization whose mission is providing positive opportunities to kids with cancer. Over many years and countless trips to amusement parks, water slides and horseback rides, she forged special bonds with the volunteers and children.
During the Aids crisis, she volunteered with the Colorado Aids Project, providing support to homebound clients. This, at a time of poor understanding and an even greater stigma for the disease.
Again, looking for another outlet to serve, she found Haven of Hope, a Denver based organization focused on the homeless community and those in need. She worked in the kitchen preparing meals while Mike served their clients in the dining hall weekly. Wanting this to be a teaching moment, Pat invited family members to the shelter to experience giving and empathy. Her four grandchildren all participated with “Grammy”.
Pat enjoyed skiing and participated with her son as a volunteer with the Children’s Handicap Ski program at Winter Park. She loved to travel and she and Mike visited many countries.
Pat will be laid to rest at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Haven of Hope, www.thoh.org
