Born in Denver, Colorado on January 10, 1945, Otto “Joe” Joseph Bebber Jr. passed away on May 10, 2025 after suffering from vascular dementia. A man whose joy for life was deep, Joe leaves behind a legacy of humor, friendship, and unforgettable stories.
Joe was the cherished son of Ruth and Otto Bebber Sr., and a proud graduate of both Wheat Ridge High School and the University of New Mexico, where he also played football. As the starting fullback for the Wheat Ridge High School team, he helped lead them to victory in the Colorado State Championship during the fall of 1962.
He followed in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and became an optometrist, serving the Lakewood community with dedication and care. In a fitting tribute to his career, he retired exactly 49 years to the day after receiving his license to practice — a milestone he was immensely proud of.
A true character, Joe was a lifelong prankster known for his mischievous charm and legendary sense of humor — including the infamous childhood prank of placing a two-legged alligator in the family bathtub. His playful spirit was infectious, and he made every room a little lighter just by being in it.
Joe had two great loves beyond his family: golf and Miller Lite — and it’s fair to say he cherished both equally. Whether on the green or at the lake with a cold one in hand, he was in his element. He also loved boating and built strong friendships that spanned from childhood to college and beyond.
He was a man of curiosity and skill, teaching himself to draft blueprints and designing and building two of the homes he proudly lived in. Always learning, always laughing — that was Joe.
He is survived by his children, Otto J. Bebber III and Jill France (Kevin), and his grandchildren: Hayden and Cassandra Bebber and Phoebe and Lainey France. His spirit will live on in their laughter, their stories, and their love for life.
Joe will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever celebrated by all who were lucky enough to know him.
