Oliver Howie Thompson, 79, of Lakewood, passed away January 8, 2022.
He was born on May 9, 1942, in Washington DC to Ben and Mathilda Jane Thompson. Howie grew up in Glen Echo, Maryland along with his two brothers, George and Hank. Howie spent his childhood summers at an outdoor camp, which he referred to as a foundational experience, and helped to solidify his lifelong appreciation of nature. After graduating from Walter Johnson high school, he attended the University of Maryland where he later went on to earn his Master's degree in botany. He was a multi-sport athlete in high school and competed in track and field while attending college. Howie never stopped enjoying active pursuits - running, hiking, backpacking, and coaching basketball and soccer.
Howie was in the U.S. Marine Corps between 1966 and 1970. Upon returning from a 13 month tour in Vietnam, he married Mary Anne Ryan in 1968. They had three children, Kerry, Kathleen, and Bryan. Shortly after Kathleen was born, they moved to Colorado, where they lived the rest of their lives.
Like his father, Howie had a long, successful, and rewarding career with the National Park Service. He built many lasting relationships and was passionate about his work. Once retired, Howie and Mary Anne enjoyed traveling. Whether it was on the road in their camper, visiting family, or traveling to Europe, they truly loved and enjoyed each other's company and embarking upon new adventures.
Family was always paramount to Howie and his family greatly benefited from his devotion. They could often be found in the Rocky Mountains backpacking and camping.
He always played an active and supportive role in his childrens' academics and athletics.
Howie was a sincere and genuinely kind person who made anyone feel at ease in his presence.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Anne Ryan Thompson and is survived by his children Kerry, Kathleen, and Bryan.
