Norma Jane Schmitt, aged 80, passed away on December 27, 2014. She was born on October 30, 1934 in Appleton City, MO to Lawrence and Alma Schmitt as the youngest of six children. She is survived by her son and her two sisters. Norma was a determined, independent woman throughout her life, and wasn't afraid to speak her mind. At a time when women were encouraged to stay at home and raise a family, Norma completed college, became a Registered Nurse and an officer in the United States Air Force, eventually settling down in Colorado and raising a son as a single parent. She had a love for the outdoors and a special place in her heart for all animals â her house was often home to adopted dogs and cats. She regularly walked into the local park to feed the ducks, and enjoyed telling stories about growing up on a rural Missouri farm with all the animals. Norma was an intelligent, practical woman who had the courage to live ""against the grain"" and gave everything she could to support those she loved. She will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers or gifts, her family suggests that donations be made in her name to your local animal shelter. Norma will be interred at Ft Logan National Cemetary in Denver, CO. Arrangements are being handled by Horan & McConaty Funeral Home, and an online guest register is available at www.horancares.com.
