Noma Lou (Butler) Hume, 93, of Aurora, Colorado, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026. Born in Enid, Oklahoma, on October 3, 1932, to Alton Cullen Butler and Bertha Elma (Edwards) Butler, Noma Lou was a true spark from the very beginning. She grew up in the Christian faith and attended the Central Christian Church of Enid with her Aunt Margaret. She possessed a sophisticated flair and a striking beauty that seemed almost too grand for her small Oklahoma hometown.
Noma Lou was an Enid High School graduate and attended Oklahoma State University. Shortly after marrying the love of her life, Bob, at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Enid, her journey as a military spouse began. Bob returned to active duty, initially teaching ROTC at the University of Oklahoma, before the couple relocated to Alexandria, Virginia. This marked the first of many moves that spanned the nation’s capital, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Aurora, Colorado, and San Antonio, Texas. Through every relocation, Noma Lou ran the household with a firm hand and unwavering dedication. While Bob worked, she raised their four boys, and the entire family readily acknowledged that Noma Lou had the tougher job.
Noma Lou’s home was always full of life, laughter, and a few beloved pets. Though she loved both the family dogs and cats, everyone knew she held a special favor for her cats. Noma Lou loved to dance, found joy and camaraderie playing bingo at the Officers' Club, and spent countless hours canning the bounty from Bob's large gardens, most notably her famous bread and butter pickles.
As a mother, Noma Lou was a loving yet practical taskmaster. Her passion for football ran deep, and she was a fiercely loyal, enthusiastic fan of both the Oklahoma Sooners and the Denver Broncos. Whether watching her favorite teams or her own sons, she was known to critique performance, holding everyone to the highest standards. Yet, she was simultaneously their biggest fan, advocate, and cheerleader. Woe to anyone who dared cross her boys or speak ill of her family; Noma Lou’s loyalty was fierce and absolute. Her infectious wit, laughter, and no-nonsense wisdom defined the Hume home. While her sons had Bob's example to chart a successful course in life, it was Noma Lou’s grit, determination, and persistent, loving guidance that truly shaped them into the men they are today.
When Bob retired from the military, the couple moved back to Aurora, Colorado, where they proudly built a new life and home together—a beautiful chapter far removed from the farming life of Enid, Oklahoma.
While she fiercely guided her sons, it was perhaps in her role as a grandmother where Noma Lou’s influence spread the widest. As “Grandma,” she relished watching her grandchildren grow, witnessing them find their own paths and become unique adults and individuals in their own right. She knew each of them deeply and personally, and she was immensely proud of the people they became. Her beloved grandchildren who carry on her legacy are Robert Hume, Hannah (Dallin) Mower, William Hume, Charlotte (Mitchell) Merrill, Stephen Hume, Grace (Austin) Henderson, Aidan Hume, Davis (Jenna) Hume, Declan Hume, Jason Hume, Haley Hume, and Rylan Hume.
Noma Lou was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 51 years, Robert F. (Bob) Hume, as well as her older brother, Milton, and older sister, Amaryllis (Evans). She leaves behind a rich legacy as a mother of four sons, “Grandma” of 12 grandchildren, and “Great-Grandma” to 7 great-grandchildren. Her four sons and their families survive her: Robert S. (Laura) Hume, Richard A. (Toni) Hume, Ryan C. (Jill) Hume, and John D. (Breanna) Hume.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. There will be a Casual Open House with Family from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at the Horan & McConaty Centennial Chapel, 5303 E. County Line Road, Centennial, CO 80122, followed by a 10:45 AM Burial Service at the Fort Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area Blue, 369 S. Sheridan Blvd., Denver, CO 80235. Noma Lou will be laid to rest alongside Bob at the Fort Logan National Cemetery.
