Nicholas Thompson Cruz, known to many as Nick, passed away on April 8, 2025, at the age of 35, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, passion, and love. Born on November 8, 1989, in Wheatridge, Colorado, Nick's life was a tapestry woven with rich experiences and deep connections. He lived in Highlands Ranch, CO, at the time of his passing.

Nick’s journey took him around the globe, enriching his life and the lives of those he met along the way. From the plains of Colorado to the bustling streets of China, where he met his beloved wife, Jolia. Nick embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm. As a top-tier USS Junior Olympic Swimmer, he traveled extensively across the USA, and his name proudly adorns a plaque in Illinois as part of the six-year-old State Chess Champion Team. Nick’s athletic prowess extended to Hagerstown, MD, where he held the 50m 12-under breaststroke record.

His thirst for knowledge and skill led him to Dortmund, Germany, after completing his GED early. Nick’s dedication paid off when he received a scholarship to the prestigious Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, becoming a Michelin-trained chef. His culinary talents shone at the 5-Star Broadmoor in Colorado Springs and other fine dining establishments. When the pandemic shifted the world, Nick’s adaptability shone through as he transitioned to aviation, becoming a certified pilot and joining the United Airlines Cadets.

Nick was not only driven but also deeply involved in his community, holding steadfast to his beliefs in scientific truths and liberal values. His gregarious nature and zest for life left an indelible mark on everyone he met. He lived with a fire in his belly, a joke always ready and the same quick wit as his mother Peggie while inspiring those around him with his passion and integrity. His laughter and unwavering spirit will forever be cherished by his family and friends.

Above all, Nick’s love for his family defined him. He adored his wife, Jolia, and their children, Harmony and Griffin, who were his world. He is survived by his wife Jolia Li Cruz, daughter Harmony Li Cruz, son Griffin Li Cruz, father Hector L Cruz, sister Kelli Thompson Cruz, brother Robert Balsewicz and Grandmother Alice Bargas Cruz. He was predeceased by his mother, Margaret (Peggie) Thompson Cruz, and sister, Lindsay Thompson Cruz.

A memorial will be held at Horan & McConaty Funeral Service and Cremation, 5303 E County Line Rd, Centennial, CO 80122, on May 3, 2025, from 4pm to 6pm. This casual affair will honor Nick’s spirit, with attendees encouraged to wear regalia that celebrates his passions, from F-1 racing, fubar cards, to culinary arts. A private viewing will be available from noon to 4pm. Following the memorial, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Highlands Ranch Senior Center, 200 E. Highlands Ranch Parkway, Highlands Ranch, CO 80126, with buffet, drinks, and music.

Nick believed in the soul's unquantifiable essence, and as we remember him, we turn to the words of the Hopi Prayer: "Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there; I do not sleep I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on the ripened grain. I am the gentle Autumn's rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die."
