Michael Frederick Thies, age 79, of Parker, Colorado, passed away December 1, 2022, at Someren Glen Retirement Community. He was born January 31, 1943, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Fred and Marian Thies. He was the middle of 3 children.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce, of 53 years (married Sept. 3, 1966). He is survived by daughters Tamara Lynne Bond (Spouse Randall Bond) and Randi Kay Maxwell (spouse Timothy Maxwell); 3 wonderful grandchildren, Timothy Bond, Connor Maxwell and Ryan Maxwell; his brother, Richard, and sister, Mary, as well as nephews, David and Dale.
Mike graduated from Prior Lake High School in 1961 where he was an accomplished athlete in football, basketball and baseball. He was an avid water skier as well. He attended Gustavus Adolphus College for one year and then graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1966.
He served in the U.S. Navy from January 13, 1967, until January 13, 1970, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. His service included 2 deployments to SE Asia/Vietnam as the Navy Attack Squadron 153 Ordnance/Weapons Officer aboard the USS Coral Sea, CVA 43. Following his military service, Mike joined Honeywell in New Hope, Minnesota. He was transferred to Denver in 1975 and worked the balance of his career with Honeywell and its spin-offs/successors.
Mike loved Colorado. He was a cowboy in his heart and eventually moved the family to a four acre ranchette east of Parker where he could have his beloved horses. He loved spending most of his time outdoors and built part of his house and his barn with his own two hands. He was a talented woodworker with many pieces ranging from small statues to ¾ size carousel horses. He loved camping and hunting in the Colorado mountains with his friends and also loved the wildlife that would visit his property. He was deeply saddened to leave his property May 2021, but soon settled into his new home at Someren Glen. He became a lively member of the community and was loved by all who knew him there.
Mike was a wonderful, devoted, and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed.
Mike will be laid to rest at Fort Logan National Cemetery, January 4, 2023, at 11:30.
