Michael Dewaun Johnson was born on May 4, 1974, in Nashville, Tennessee. Although his early years were marked by extreme challenges, his life would become a remarkable testimony of perseverance, purpose, faith, and service.

Raised in a loving family, Michael grew up in Denver, Colorado, where his curiosity about the world became evident at an early age. He was fascinated by different countries, cultures, and world events. What began as a childhood interest eventually became the foundation for a life dedicated to serving others around the globe.

Michael graduated from Bishop Machebeuf High School before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Colorado Denver. He later earned a Master’s Degree in International Affairs from American University in Washington, D.C., and furthered his studies in France and Lebanon.

His passion for international affairs led him to a distinguished career in humanitarian and international development. Michael served with organizations including the United Nations, The Carter Center, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). His work took him to countries around the world, where he partnered with communities, governments, and organizations to promote peace, development, and hope.

Gifted in languages, Michael spoke French, Arabic, Spanish, Italian, and Turkish. His ability to connect with people across cultures reflected both his intellect and his genuine love for humanity.

Throughout his career, Michael received numerous honors, including being named a Fulbright Scholar to Qatar University and receiving the United States Congressional Hunter Center Alumni Leadership Award for his outstanding leadership and service.

Despite traveling the world, Michael’s heart never drifted far from home. Family was one of his greatest joys. He treasured every opportunity to spend time with his nieces and nephews, celebrating their accomplishments, encouraging their dreams, and sharing in their lives. Whether offering wisdom, laughter, or attempting to teach Kadyn French, Michael loved deeply and remained closely connected to those he cherished.

Above every accomplishment, Michael’s faith in Jesus Christ guided his life. He believed that serving others was an expression of serving God, and he faithfully lived that calling through both his profession and his personal life.

Michael was preceded in death by his nephew, Landen Heinze.

Michael leaves to cherish his memory his loving parents, Lurix and Shirley “Sam” Johnson; his sisters, Tobi Johnson-Compton, Chaka (Jason) Heinze, and Kiesha Johnson; his brother, George Johnson; his nieces and nephews, Jamel (Tyler)Johnson-Compton, Kaylen Compton, and Micah Compton, and great nephews Malakai Johnson-Compton and Dante Johnson-Compton; Treyben(Erin) Heinze, Maya Heinze, Isaiah Heinze(Isabella Hiatt-Fiancee), and Ezra Heinze; Kendall Johnson and Kadyn Johnson; along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, dear friends, and colleagues around the world whose lives were enriched by his kindness, compassion, faith, and service.

Michael’s life reminds us that greatness is measured not only by the places we go, but by the lives we touch. His kindness, brilliance, humility, unwavering faith, and commitment to serving others leave a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
