Michael Allen Fraser was born and raised in Texas to Jack Fraser and Lois Allen Fraser. Mike’s younger brother was Keith Fraser. Lois and Jack divorced when Mike was young, and when they remarried he was very fortunate to have two step-parents who loved him dearly. Lois’s husband was Jim Webster. Jack’s wife was Joyce Cude. Jack, Lois, Keith and Jim have passed away.
Mike was raised hunting, fishing and camping with his brother, his father, and his grandfather. Family vacations were always centered around these activities as he grew up. Those were passions he pursued throughout his life. He not only enjoyed hunting and fishing, he enjoyed teaching others to do those activities. He shared this knowledge and excitement with family members, friends, and his children.
He attended Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas where he made life- long friends as a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Over the years he enjoyed reunions with the men that he bonded with during those memorable college years in Texas.
In 1987, Mike married Linda Fenn in Houston, Texas in a ceremony on the University of Houston campus. They had a daughter, Taylor Leigh Fraser, while living in Houston in 1990. When Taylor was still a toddler, Mike and Linda left their Texas roots to find new adventures in new places and moved to the Kansas City area. That was a big move for two people who had neither ever lived outside the state of Texas. In 1993 their second child, Sterling Michael Fraser was born. Mike and Linda spent seven years in Overland Park, Kansas where they made many wonderful friends and memories on Beverly Street.
It was Mike’s dream from a young age to someday live in Colorado. He and Linda continued over the years to try to make that happen. Mike was determined to not be one of those people at the end of his life who said, “I always wanted to live in Colorado”, but to be one of those people who made that dream happen. In 1999 he did. On a house hunting trip to the area, he and Linda visited Pine, Colorado. As they drove up the mountain to look at houses on an evening with a full moon over the mountains, they knew that if they were going to raise their family in Colorado, they were meant to do it in the mountains. Mike dearly loved the house, and even more so the lot they chose, with a creek running through it and daily visits from elk. He stayed in that house for over 20 years.
Mike’s grandfather came to this country from Scotland and as Mike’s children grew up he developed an interest in his Scottish heritage. He saved for years to take his family to Scotland to see where his grandfather came from and he came back with a new excitement about his Scottish roots, even buying a kilt to wear to local Scottish festivals.
While living in the mountains, Mike contributed to the community in many ways. He was a cub scout leader, he served as a member of the Platte Canyon School District School Board, and he loved being a judge at the annual Science Fair at his children’s elementary school for many years (even after his children no longer attended there) and more.
Being knowledgeable about personal finances was something that was very important to Mike and after his children were grown, he decided he wanted to help others be empowered in their financial choices and decision making. He became an instructor for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University.
Mike and Linda divorced in 2013 and he chose to stay in the house that he loved. In 2016 he found love again with Norma Loyd. They remodeled the home in the mountains and gave it a new life as they began to build a life together.
Mike had a very successful career as a pharmaceutical representative with Johnson and Johnson for over 25 years. He was consistently recognized as one of the best salesmen in the country. After taking early retirement he pursued a new passion as a realtor.
Days before Mike’s passing, Mike proposed to Norma Loyd. She and her children, Saige Harrison and Lucas Loyd were an important part of his family.
One cannot summarize the life of Mike Fraser without talking about his love for his children. Mike was a very devoted father, invested in being the best father he could be. There was nothing more important to him than providing them with the best possible life and experiences that he could. His pride in his children was paramount to who he was as a person. Taylor and Sterling were his world and he worked tirelessly to make sure they had opportunities to travel, an education, a home they were proud of, and plenty of adventures. Of all of the accomplishments in Mike’s life, the thing that made him most proud were his children.
Mike will be missed dearly.
