Michael Edward Cummings passed away on August 5, 2019.
Mike had been an educator for 30 years in the classroom and administration. He started his career when he chose the Five Points area for his student teaching assignment. He felt this was an opportunity for him to learn about the diverse population and their needs. However, he did not count on the teachers strike of 1969 which propelled him into the classroom on his own. It was a valuable experience for him. It wasn't enough just to educate others, he had to continue to educate himself as well. He was always looking for better ways to contribute in the classroom as well as out. One such opportunity came when he was able to work with a friend on drug addiction for at-risk teens and he was also appointed to a committee under then Governor Lamm.
After his retirement from the public classroom, he taught beginning computer at a senior recreation center. He loved technology and all it had to offer. One of his hopes was to be able to participate in a political arena- he didn't believe in sitting on the sidelines and watch and the opportunity came when he was elected as Precinct Captain. It gave him the chance to exchange views and to listen to others even if they disagreed. He also possessed a âquirky' sense of humor, but it was always in fun and never malicious. Tolerance and acceptance of others was how he wanted to live.
Mike loved the Broncos, always his number one team, but the Avalanche was a close second. His Avalanche hat was his ""lucky"" hat, and would fret if he couldn't find it when he went out. Mike had Bronco season tickets for over 40 years, he surrendered them as he realized that he was no longer physically able to attend the games anymore. It was like losing an old friend. He died shortly after that from complications of diabetes that he had struggled with for 30 years.
He loved his family, which included human and pet alike. His Siamese, Loki, was very dear to him. Mike was the only one Loki would lay on his back with- a sign of complete trust. Mike was someone you could always go to and know he would be there.
He is survived by his wife, Gay, of 51 years; his son, Mike, and Mikeâs wife, Nicole, who was more daughter than daughter in law; his sister, Carolynne Cummings Forster, and of course, Loki and Baby, his furry kids.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 23, 2019 at 1:00 in the afternoon at the Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3101 South Wadsworth Boulevard, Lakewood, Colorado.
