Maxine Chavez

Maxine B. Chavez née Gonzales, passed away peacefully at her home in Denver, CO on March 19, 2023, just shy of her 93rd birthday. Maxine was born at home to Max and Lavina T. Gonzales. As a small child, she developed a passion to travel and learn about new places and cultures as her family moved several times during her early childhood due to her father's work. Her family eventually settled in Rocky Ford, CO to afford her and her siblings stability when she started school. Maxine lived there until she married her husband, Joe, and moved to Denver. She and her husband eventually settled in Thornton, CO where they raised their children. In 1987, at the encouragement of her husband who had retired a year earlier, Maxine chose to retire so they could spend more time with their family and friends and travel, which brought her great joy. She lived a full and event-filled life and made friends easily due to her outgoing nature and because she was so very caring, thoughtful, gracious, and generous.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Chavez, her children Joseph (Lynne), Charles (Tina), Michele (Richard), and Jeanine, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and her two younger brothers, Dick (Maureen) and James (Dana).

A mass will be held for Maxine at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 2626 E 7th Avenue Parkway, Denver, CO, on March 31, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers or other items, please make a donation to Good Shepherd Catholic Church, your local church, or your preferred charitable organization.
