Matthew Alexander Sterling, age 20, of Centennial, Colorado passed away in Fort Collins, Colorado on Tuesday, October 29th, 2024.
Matthew was born August 30, 2004, in Denver, Colorado to his father and mother, Chris and Jennifer Sterling of Centennial, Colorado.
Matthew graduated from Eaglecrest High School in Aurora, Colorado in 2023. He attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins during the 2023-24 school year.
Matthew was in the process of enlisting in the US Navy. He was working as a courtesy clerk at King Soopers in Fort Collins.
Matthew absolutely loved playing football, starting with flag football as a young boy, then as a quarterback in 7th and 8th grade for the AYL Spartans Vegas team, making it one play away from the league championship his first year. In high school, he played both wide receiver and defensive end for the Eaglecrest Raptor football team. He also ran the 110 and 300 hurdles for the Eaglecrest track team, even taking up pole vault during his senior year. His track coach said that Matthew could be put in anywhere and that he would always come through with flying colors.
Matthew attended Creekside/The Way Church from the time he was in his parents’ arms until he left home for CSU. Matthew enjoyed the youth group at church and attended many youth camps associated with our church over the years.
Matthew was funny, strong, could throw the skin off of a football, smart, finally grew taller than his dad, ate everything in sight, was a tech wizard for both parents, a good friend, easy to talk into a neighborhood basketball game, seemed to have boundless energy, turned into a great big brother, loved his momma, asked a lot of great questions, intuitive, hardworking, and was a “dog” on any sports team he joined.
Matthew is survived by his parents, his younger sister Abigail, his paternal grandfather Berk Sterling of Lafayette, Colorado, his maternal grandparents Oran and Marcia Wingler of Phoenix, Arizona, his uncle and aunt John and Suzanne Sterling of Atlanta, Georgia, his uncle Todd Wingler of Phoenix, Arizona and his aunt Alison Wingler, also of Phoenix, Arizona, as well as many cousins and extended family members.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother Sandra (Epps) Sterling of Lafayette, Colorado and the beloved family dog Bosco.
