Matthew Jay Roberts

May 26, 1968 — March 27, 2026

Commerce City

Matthew “Matt” Jay Roberts, age 57, of Denver, Colorado, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2026 from an aggressive form of cancer. His family was honored and blessed to accompany him during his passing in the comfort of his home.

His family rejoices in his dedication to Christ and his arrival in heaven to join in everlasting worship in peace.

Matthew was born on Sunday, May 26, 1968, to James Keith Roberts and Janice Louise Radford in Durango Colorado. Matt graduated from Durango Senior High School (1986) and shortly thereafter met the love of his life, Melissa Roberts, at work. They married on July 9, 1990 in an intimate courthouse ceremony in Las Vegas Nevada (not by Elvis - Viva, Las Vegas!)

Matt and Melissa proudly raised three children Nicole, Mitchell, and Phillip.

From a young age, Matt felt called to serve his community and did so as a volunteer fireman for the Rafter J Fire Department. In 1991 he began what would become a lifelong career with the police department, serving his community both as a deputy in Montgomery County, Texas, and an officer with Denver Police Department in Colorado. Over the course of 35 years in law enforcement, he never lost his sense of humor, compassion, or empathy. Matt felt that his life’s calling was best exemplified in dedication to his community — leading him to find great purpose and brotherhood in law enforcement.

In addition to serving as an officer, he enjoyed woodworking, films, video games, the majesty of God‘s nature in the mountains, as well as being a dedicated and loving leader to his family. His love for his wife, Melissa was inspiring and absolute. They were both incredibly proud of their lineage as parents and grandparents. Their home is full of furniture and furnishings made by his hands. His family, friends and supporters know how special it is to receive one of his works. He crafted from the depths of his enormous heart leaving his mark on all his craftworks.

Matt was an avid fan of driving his family in rubber duck covered Jeeps on beaten paths in the mountains. Their adventures would always include countless stops for family photos with knowledge drops on rocks and geodes (even against his family's will to listen). His family was mildly obsessed with him in the way that he was mildly obsessed with geology – he was their rock. A truly unique formation of all this world has to offer.

His family would like to share some of the things that will always make them smile when they think of him:

Every single day he greeted Melissa with a gentle smile and “Hello, beautiful”.

Even five minutes alone with Matt proved how much of a jokester he was. He was the king of Dad jokes and one liners that had you bent over in laughter.

He fostered a childhood fear of spotting Sasquatch that he was never able to shake off — even to a degree of decorating their home and Jeep with a few Sasquatch sighting prank signs.

Matt’s loyalty to Melissa was never questioned throughout their 35 year marriage — until she learned that he had a passionate relationship with stuffed French toast despite assuring her he was following a strict diabetic diet. He simply adored her — and powdered sugar syrupy toast!

He is survived by his wife, Melissa Roberts, and their children: Nicole and Ronald Shannon, Mitchell Roberts and Phillip Roberts; his mother, Janice Roberts and mother in law Jeannie McCrocklin; and his sister, Amy Bowen, and her children; his three grandchildren, Alyssa Roberts, Daniel Shannon, and Constance “Cass” Shannon, and by his extended family: Elizabeth Thomas, Dr Michelle and Timothy Mulder, Amy and Ryan Mozek, Jonathan and Angela Tekell, Steven and Lisa Tekell, and all the children of extended family members; and last but not least beloved pets, especially his obese pug “Bob”.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Roberts, his father in law, Dr W Michael “Mike” McCrocklin, and his brother in law, Staff Sergeant David Thomas.
